A big state meet weekend and the first round of NXN regionals produced several upsets
Every year, there is a lull in the action in New York State. Most teams use that time to prepare for the brutal string of championship meets to come, which whittles the State down from 1000 teams across four classifications, down to one Federation Champion in five weeks time.

Breakdown of Girls' Varsity Races
When the championship portion of the season rolls around that’s when most high school track and field athletes do most of their team’s heavy lifting. So since some of the county championships have started around New York State, I wanted to take a highlight some of the best doubles we’ve seen over this past weekend. Here are some that stood out.
Anima Banks won in 2:50.05, the fifth-fastest time in New York State history and a Section 1 record. She bettered a time of 2:51.2 set by Kristin Reese of Carmel in 2007. Mary Cain’s second-place finish, 2:50.84, crushed the New York State freshman class record. The previous mark of 2:53.02 was set by Brianna Welch of North Shore in 2007.
PAWLING – North Rockland’s Barry Baloga is good for a speech and the best words should always been well-timed. Through coincidence and calamity, North Rockland has yet to be the team it expected to be this season. Baloga knew it was time to tell them so.
It took a plane trip out to Illinois for Warwick Valley to see where they are as a team. What they discovered is that in a season were they are expecting a state championship, there is still work to be done.
James Naglieri admitted he was shocked. Stunned even. He didn’t know quite what to expect from his North Rockland team that graduated three seniors last year, including their ace Nick Hughes.
New Rochelle coach Rosalind Gallino swore her team had run out of ammunition. North Rockland coach Gene Dall thought the same about his squad. Mount Vernon was poised the snatch the whole thing. But that’s why teams snatch and claw for points early.

NEW YORK – They were going to have to wait for a little while. It wasn’t the kind of race that anyone was going to eyeball from the finish and proclaim the winner. So everyone waited, knowing that they had fought the good fight until Christian Brothers Academy was crowned winners of the first real cross country battle royal of the season.
This week's How They Train features North Rockland Nick Hughes. The senior is top runners on one of the best teams in Class AA in the state this season.
HARRIMAN PARK – It isn’t often that a team loses one of their best runners and the following year, with mostly the same group, they improve. Guess we can call North Rockland the exception. With mostly the same nucleus the Red Raiders entered the season projected to be one of the top teams in the state and even still, they believe they’re better than people think they are.
New York State has it's own NXN Region, so the top two teams at the NXN Regional both qualify for the NXN Championships in Portland, Oregon. Here's a look at some of the top teams from last year and where they stack up right now in paper.
This week's How They Train features NSIC mile bronze medalist Chris Carrington of North Rockland. How They Train is designed to give an in-depth look at how runners just like you train around the state. Since there is no uniform formula, we decided to find out yours.
KINGS PARK – Nick Hughes turned the corner for the last 200 meters at Sunken Meadow Park glued to Port Washington’s Marco Bertolotti’s shoulder. They weren’t just looked to out-kick each other. Someone was going to break.
BEAR MOUNTAIN – Pearl River senior Mike Hickey glanced over his shoulder steps after the first mile of the race. He gauged his pace against his chasers then realized he’d be riding solo for the rest of this one.
College freshman Caitlin Lane and Pat DuPont race well at Penn State, teams pics from Red Raider, highlights from some other meets we overlooked last weekend.
HARRIMAN – Chris Carrington had even grown skeptical of himself. After months of injuries and disappointment during the winter and spring track seasons, doubt seeped into his thoughts, slowly swiping his confidence.
New York XC tends to start a little slower than the rest of the country. I look around at most other states and they have all of these huge early season meets, while in NY, most teams haven't even opened up yet while others are going to some smaller meets scattered around the state.
Check out what starting boxes your squad has.
The Arlington boys and girls hang on to top spots. Suffern boys and girls also ranked very high. Week two posted here.
WAPPINGERS FALLS – Any runner that has compete at North Rockland with Barry Baloga as his coach would know, if nothing else, that Baloga is good for a solid speech. Baloga, an English teacher, started this one with a line from a poem by Robert Frost.
