Pre-States Marks A Return To Big Competition - Full Preview

Boys Races

Boys Race 1 - 9am

Top Athletes: John Fontanez (Nanuet) - 176, Mike McMahon (CBA Syracuse) - 169, Anthony Otis (Fayetteville-Manlius) - 166 (above)

Breakdown: Section 1's Fontanez will be venturing upstate to continue his win streak after taking home the title at Warwick, another former State Meet Course. Fayetteville-Manlius will look for the team title, as well as setting the standard in the merge to carry through the day.

Boys Race 3 - 10am

Top Athletes: Collin Stafford (South Lewis) - 172, Brendan Conniff (Manhasset) - 165

Breakdown: Coming off a win at VVS, Stafford will be taking on one of the top athletes out of Long Island to highlight the second race.

Boys Race 5 - 11am

Top Athletes: Ryan Hagan (Liverpool) - 174, Adam Furman (Tri-Valley) - 168, Broden Haltiner (Newark) - 165, Axl Andrus (Horseheads) - 162, Nolan Axford (East Aurora) - 161, Scott Schmuck (Wheatley) - 160

Breakdown: Liverpool holds the individual course record at Chenango, and Hagan will be looking to take home another individual win for his team here. East Aurora is typically a strong collective, hoping to win the team title.

Boys Race 7 - Noon

Top Athletes: Jack Gregorski (Corning) - 186 (above), Ashton Bange (Corning) - 175, Collin Catherwood (Monroe-Woodbury) - 169, Pierce Young (Arkport) - 167, Marcus Homa (Corning) - 165, Drew Cox (Pittsford-Mendon) - 164, Liam Cody (Vestal) - 162

Breakdown: Corning is the top team in the State, and will get their first of a few cracks at the State Meet Course. Last weekend, they ran well, although their Varsity athletes were split across two races. The winner of their JV race would have made it to be their #5 athlete, and their projected #2 Matt Gensel was off from his 2020 titles down in JV too. If Corning is ready to put together their collective might, they could have a strong showing here. Note: Corning is entered in both Race 7 & 9, and might opt to run their B-Team here.

Boys Race 9 - 1pm

Top Athletes: Gitch Hayes (LaSalle) - 190 (below), Jayson Chichelli (McQuaid) - 181, Ryan Bush (Saratoga) - 180, Adam Barbato (Victor) - 177, Zack Winnicki (Lancaster) - 175, Harry Griff (Fox Lane) - 169, Connor Thomas (Webster-Thomas) - 165, Noah Bender (Fox Lane) - 165, Cooper Branch (Irondequoit) - 162

Breakdown: The strongest of the individual races of the day, the States Top Returner in Gitch Hayes will get his eyes on the future State Meet Course. McQuaid has the pieces for a strong run as well, and if they have two new faces in the crowd, they could make a statement in the team hunt in the merge.
