The Great New York State Meet Preview - Indoors 2022

Boys Long Jump

Event Info: 2020 Winner: Christian Quinn (Freeport) 22-11, State Record: 26-0.25, Meet Record (2000s): 24-2.50

State of the Action:  This event will be a real test for the age old question: can you measure an event by the seeds alone? The question stems from the top two seeds. Tyler Gong (Collegiate) has the top seed at 23-0.25, while Jabari Clarke (New Rochelle) enters at 22-9.75. But that doesn't tell the whole story. Outside those specific jumps, neither has come within two feet of those marks before or after those clearances. So while it means they have the potential to win it all with one big effort, it's the consistency of the marks that may prove victorious here.

That's where Ryan John (Valley Stream North) and Alexandros Wheeler (Columbia) come in. Both are consistently in the high 21's, low 22's in the pit, making them the safer picks here. That's not to say they are completely safe, per se, but it means they are more likely to put marks out there in that range, which looks to be the magic number for a title in 2022.
