State of the Action: Two names come into the race with nearly identical Season's Best. Emily Bush (Saratoga) leads the field at 4:32.47, and was your runner-up at the XC Class A State Meet. Kate Putman (Cicero-North Syracuse) has run 4:32.54 this Season, but her 2:47.22 in the 1000m last weekend indicates that mark will drastically improve. This simply sets up a grudge match at the front of the race, ready to play out on the State Meet stage. Heading into the race, Putman has the edge, after giving up ambitions in the 3000m and 1K where she is both the State Leader by five seconds, to achieve big things in the middle distance. Putman's the State Leader in two events, looking to add a third. Bush is strong enough to make the race interesting, and is never one to just give in. It will take a full effort in this race to become the State Champ. Not to be forgotten are the other entrants closer to 4:40, and the only athlete separating that pack from the front is Julia Schriefer (Wheatley) at 4:36.71. She's got four seconds separation both in front and behind her, so she'll have to commit to one pack or the other early in the race, or risk racing alone. | |||||
