| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Hornets lost frontrunner Ben Otis and Jack Duncanson off last year's 2nd place States and 2nd place NXN team, but they still return enough of an elite group to make them the top rated team in Class A and preseason #4 in the nation. Junior Geoff Howles and senior Garrett Brennan pack the most sting at the top with TRs that will likely be living in the 180 territory. Sophomore Peyton Geehrer has huge upside, and Matthew Tripp and Sam Otis cement a top 5 that will be favored to win an 11th straight bid to the Nationals in Portland. FM usually has some surprises to add to the lineup, so there may be some more feet adding that always vital element of depth along with Eli Capri and Max Perry.

Last Year's Summary: 12th in NXN, 2nd in NXN-NY, 1st in States A, 1st in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The
Hawks seemed to actually like the less than pristine conditions at
States, as they placed Quinn Nicholson, Dan Gahagan, and Torrey
Jacobson-Evans in the top 10 and edged out Fayetteville-Manlius by 2
points to claim a second straight championship. A second place at NXN-NY
then earned Corning its first visit to NXN Nationals, where the Hawks
posted a 12th place and Nicholson led the team by finishing 41st.
Nicholson and Gahagan are graduated, but the rest of the squad is back
and hoping to replicate the States results on the way to a repeat trip
to Portland. Jacobson-Evans had a breakout year as a sophomore as he
boosted his speed rating by 30 points from freshman season, and though
that kind of leap again this year would require supernatural forces, he
should be among the top guys in the state. Seniors Nathan Lawson and
Bryce Derick help form one of the top 3 trios in the state along with FM
and Burnt Hills. The Hawks will need to develop the back of the pack as
well as they did last year, and they seem to have received some new reinforcements there.

Last Year's Summary: 4th in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Last year was a rebuilding time for a depleted Blue Streaks squad after a 2016 States visit. Shea Weilbaker was the only Saratoga guy who kept going after the team's 4th place finish in Sectionals, but he extended his season all the way to a 69th place finish in NXN Nationals. Now a senior, Weilbaker will be leading a Saratoga squad that returns its top 5 from last year, including Aidan Waite and Ezra Ruggles who earned top 25 spots at Sectionals. The Blue Streaks are again the favorites in the always viciously competitive S2-A, though Guilderland and Shenendehowa will launching their usual big challenges for the Sectional crown.

Last Year's Summary: 5th in NXN-NY, 4th in States, 1st in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
After a somewhat tumultuous first half to the 2017 season, Smithtown prevailed in scorcher of an S11-A Sectionals and went on to place 4th at States. Two of the top have graduated with the departure of Steven Spreizer and Nick Cipolla, but the rest of the varsity is back led by Nick DeFelice, who a big breakout year as a junior. David Cabello, John Cuff, and Aidan Kennedy also return from top 20 finishes in Sectionals. Smithtown starts the year with a big gap over the other top teams in S11-A, and it should be feeling Bullish about its prospects for a States meet held at the local Sunken Meadows course. A key for Smithtown will be the performance of senior Kevin Cawley who missed the 2017 season but had a strong track season and rated a 166 TR in his sophomore year. It's always wise to be conservative with estimates early in the season, but it would not be a surprise for Cawley to be back at 166.
Guilderland | Flying Dutchmen

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Dieter Drake (1987, A-2nd), Tom Ryan (1994, A-5th), Brian Rhodes-Devey (2004, AA-4th) (2005, AA-1st) (2006, AA-8th), Seth DuBois (2005, AA-9th), Noah Carey (2014, A-9th) (2015, A-4th) (2016, A-3rd)
Last Year's Summary: 11th in NXN-NY, 12th in Federation, 5th in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The results for Guilderland' and frontrunner Noah Tindale were pretty similar to 2016's, and Tindale was not able to earn a place at States even though he finished the year as the 9th rated runner in Class A in the state. But S2-A is hugely competitive, and the Flying Dutchmen will be in a tough battle again with Saratoga and Shenendehowa after a 5th place finish last year. Guilderland's top 5 rated runners from last year are back though, and that should make the team one of the favorites to win its first Sectional title in 28 years.
