Pulling off a 600m and 1000m double is no easier in the Leaders contest than it is in a real meet, where the two events are usually back-to-back. No guy managed that feat, and only Claudia Francis in her senior year of 2011 captured the 600m-1000m top marks. Far more common is for an athlete to dominate an event for a string of years. For the boys, Richard Rose in the 600m and Zavon Watkins in the 1000m pulled off three-peats. Strymar Livingston also got two in a row in the 600m. The Francis girls (no relation) got sophomore-senior split titles, Phyllis in the 300m and Claudia in the 600m (along with the senior year tops in the 300m), and Emma Gallagher took consecutive bests in the 300m. |

Liam Purdy's top mark in the 1000m at Section 1 Qualifiers sends the 2014 guys into the lead, with Purdy edging James Asselmeyer's last year's mark by 0.06 seconds. Asselmeyer's place puts the 2015 squad into a 2nd place tie with first-round leader 2009, which gets a 5th and 4th from Strymar Livingston and Alex Hatz (remember that name). Strymar Livingston temporarily gives his 2012 squad the lead with a 1:17.58 in the 600m, but they fall back to 5th after junior-year Zavon Watkins tops his sophomore and senior selves to get a 3rd in the 1000m. With 5 teams still within 5 points of each other at the top, you could say it's still a very strategic pace going on right now with no year wanting to bust out yet and risk a burn-out before getting to the relays.

Two runners named Sammy and Kamryn put in their trademark kicks to burn by some very famous names and send the 2015 girls into a big double-digit lead after wins in the 600m and 1000m. In 2nd is a 2013 team that got a 5th from a junior Emma Gallagher and 3rd from Sabrina Southerland. Mary Cain was nipped by 0.02 seconds by Watson in the 1000m, but her 2nd helped her 2012 team move into a tie for 3rd with a 2011 team that got a pair of 4ths from Claudia Francis.

The Watson and McIntosh 1sts combined with a 2nd from Asselmeyer and 3rd from Richard Rose has catapulted the 2015 squads into a largish 12 point lead after two groups' action is done. But rumors are floating around that there are other teams getting ready to launch a big challenge. |
