NYT&F Battle of the Years - Leaders Showdown 2008-2015 Indoors

. . . . . . Group 1: Sprints

The sprinters are always around at the beginning of the meets to kick the action into gear. Unlike in outdoors sprints where the 100m and 200m are fairly closely related distances, the indoors 55m and 300m have a much wider gap. This means that on the guys' side, only Jermaine Brown back in 2009 posted the best times at both distances. On the girls' side though, Whitney Fountain, Kadecia Baird, and Brenessa Thompson have earned the top perch in both events in the same year. And for the guys, only 55m specialist Winslow Dorsanvil earned back-to-back Leaders crowns, while for the girls, Thompson and Lateisha Philson in the 55m and Fountain and Baird in the 300m posted consecutive titles. Fountain also captured sophomore and senior year bests in the 55m, a skipping feat that will pop up a few more times in the Leaders competition. And no athlete posted the best times in the 300m and the more mid distance 600m, but Philson did add on two 55m hurdles tops as double-ups for her 55m titles in 2011 and 2012, with those pesky barriers in the hurdles slowing her down by less than a second.

Jermaine Brown single-handedly puts the 2009 guys into the lead with a blazing 6.31 win in the 55m and a 3rd in the 300m. Anton Porter's win in the 300m pushes the 2014 squad into 2nd, and in a battle of Mount Vernon guys, Rai Benjamin passes Steven Gayle in the 300m to square the 3rd place score for the 2015 and 2012 teams.

In the battle of speed legends, Whitney Fountain pulls off a 2nd in the 55m and a 4th in the 300m in her senior year to edge the 2010 squad into the lead. Kadeca Baird used her senior experience to take the 300m for the 2013 team, but she was at the back in the 55m, so her squad is tied for 2nd. 55m aficionado Brenessa Thompson reverses Baird-2013's experience with a super fast 6.88 in the 55m but the least speedy time in the 300m for the 2015 squad. And with a 2nd in the 300m, Zola Golden teamed with Thompson in 2014 to add her squad to the 2nd-place-tie congestion.

Except for the short-handed 2008 squad, all the teams are in the hunt after the first group's action with scores ranging from 20 to 24. 2009 and 2014 are in the lead, but there's a long way to go and many races to run.
