A New Slew Of Faces To Fight For Podium Top At The New York Federation Championship

Girls Individual Race

Breakdown: We'll finally get a strong race on equal footing.  No mud swaying the results for some runners over others (although rain is in the forecast, the course manages it much better than States).  That being said, it would be hard for anyone to convince us otherwise that this is Katelyn Tuohy's race to lose.  Her Speed Rating average this season is ten points higher than anyone else in the field's lifetime best.  The person most likely to challenge Tuohy would be Kelsey Chmiel, who could very well run a Top 5 All-Time Bowdoin Mark in her own right (she is currently #11 AT.)  Behind that pair, the race gets a little more interesting, as there is a cluster of girls who can switch up the finishing order in a number of ways.  Of that next group, Hannah Reale is the only one pushing for valuable team points, so consider her to have the most incentive.

Addendum on Tuohy's Record Attempt: Katelyn Tuohy has made it no secret that she want's to go all-out at the Federation Meet, and try to break 17mins.  If she said that in July, we'd have written it off as an overzealous proclamation.  Now, it's a distinct reality it could go down.  She ran 17:10.31 while doing a workout at the Section 1 Championships, so that ten seconds should be an easy drop.  She has been pretty consistently at a 167 Speed Rating all season, despite the muddy conditions at Pre-States.  That means any type of course conditions shouldn't slow her down.  She actually managed to break that State Meet Course Record by about 12-seconds, even considering the course was running about a minute and a half slower than normal.  17-mins exactly would most likely elicit a 170 speed rating, and anything lower could see that number jump.  This could be a race for the ages.
