This Year's Outlook
The reigning champ Beavers are going for state title number 17 this year and will be favored to win it with a deep and relatively young squad built around family support. Losing Connor Demo, Erik Campeau, Cameron Smith, and Caleb Goldthrite from last year's top 10 (Beaver squads get big) has hardly dented the Beaver's prospects. Following in the footsteps of his brother Logan, freshman Colton Kempney returns as the frontrunner for the Beavers after a 4th place States finish. Cory Demo and Brayden Campeau are set to take over their graduated brother's spots higher in the lineup, and Josiah Evan, Matt Moser, and Dylan Williams should be filling out the Beaver pack. But there are so many guys in the mix at Beaver River, it would not be a surprise to see some of last year's freshmen or even younger guys having big years. The scary part for other Class D teams is that none of the top 5 rated returning runners are seniors, so we could be talking about a long Beaver dynasty here.

Sauquoit ValleyIndians

Sauquoit Valley's Dylan Canarelli finished 3rd in the States D race last year.

This Year's Outlook
The Indians lost States medalists Dylan Canarelli and Taylor Philpotts to graduation, so even though they are 2nd rated in NY Class D, they have some work to do to regain the S3-D title from Beaver River after a 4-point loss last year. Austin Canaguier, Michael Makuszak, and Mr. Slater-Constantine are back from top-20 Sectionals places in 2017, and Sauquoit Valley has enough youth in the lineup to potentially boost the Indians up to the level they will need to compete with a deeper Beaver squad at Sectionals.

Oakfield-AlabamaHornets

Oakfield-Alabama senior Cole McDonnell finished 4th in the Wayne Pre-States race 4 last September.

This Year's Outlook
Addison has moved to Class C to open the way for a new champ in S5-D, and Oakfield-Alabama seems like the probable winner in 2018. The lead three Hornets group of Kyle Mott, Zach Hall, and Derek McIntire are back from top-15 Sectionals finishes. The Hornets will still need to build up the back of the lineup after some losses of varsity members including frontrunner Cole McDonnell, but they may be shooting for their top-2 ever finish at States.

Maple HillWildcats

Maple Hill's Noah Albanese finished 33rd in the States D race to lead the 5th place Wildcats.

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers):  Pat Glover (1963, C-7th), Jordan Healy (2012, C-8th) (2013, D1-th)

This Year's Outlook
The Wildcats made their first ever visit to States and finished 5th last year. This year they should improve on that position with most of the varsity back from last year. Noah Albanese and Nate Mannion return as team leaders, and Quinn Pratico and Thatcher Deyoe complete a Maple Hill quartet of seniors who placed in the Sectional top 20 last year. The Wildcats won S2-D by 52 points in 2017, and the biggest challenge will likely come from North Warren again if it can fill out its squad.

Lake PlacidBombers

Section: 7Class: DColors: Blue and gold

Lake Placid senior Scott Schulz led the 6th place Bombers with a 20th place medal at States.

This Year's Outlook
The Bombers slipped back to 6th at States last year and lost frontrunner Scott Schulz to graduation. The potential though this year for a fairly young and deep squad is strong. James Flanigan and Jesse Izzo return on the lead, and if Lake Placid gets the expected development from the younger guys behind, the Bombers could be zooming up a few places at States this year.
