Tuesday Top Ten Toughest State Standards Kyle Brazeil May 07, 2013

10. Boys 3000m Steeplechase

State Standard: 9:42.0/9:42.24

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 18

Comment - It would seem the longer the distance, the harder it is to qualify.  Throw a couple of barriers in the way, and you have a standard not commonly hit, partly because not every facility can afford the water pit.

9 - Girls Shot Put

State Standard: 38-03

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 17

Comment - This mark may not last as that hard to get, as we already have 8 people who have passed the mark in 2013.  But it seems that the golden standard for shot is just out of reach for most, as lowering it an inch adds multitudes of talent.

8 - Boys 3200m

State Standard: 9:20.5/9:20.74

Number of Qualifiers in 2012- 16

Comment - Averaging 4:40 miles, twice in a row seems to be a difficult task for the xc-heavy state of New York.  With only 4 people in the last five years actually breaking 9-min (Thomas Awad did it via 2-mile conversion last year), the 3200m is a tough battle to face.

7 - Boys 4x100m

State Standard: 42.8/43.04

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 15

Comment - One of the only sprint marks on our list, the 4x100m is one of the most techinical running events on the oval.  With nearly a quarter of the race run in exchange zones, anything can happen on the handoff.

6 - Boys 1600m

State Standard: 4:16.5/4:16.74

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 14

Comment - We had nine athletes under this mark indoors, and six already outdoors, indicating this number may be another that is getting more attention.

5 - Girls 4x400m

State Standard: 3:56.6/3:56.84

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13

Comment - Finding four girls on a team under 60secs is never easy, and only thirteen teams managed to accomplish it last year.  The number of qualifiers may actually go down this year, as some of the top teams have yet to show their dominance has returned from last year.

4 - Girls 3000m

State Standard: 10:03.0/10:03.24

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13

Comment - A little slower when compared to the male equivalent standard (9:20 (B) is about 10flat (G)), but it seems to be more difficult to break.  We've got seven under already, with only three coming from the Glavin, which was a field specifically set to break 10:00.00

3 - Boys 3200m

State Standard: 9:20.5/9:20.74

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13

Comment -

2 - Girls 2000m Steeplechase

State Standard: 7:05.3/7:05.54

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 11

Comment -

1 - Girls 1500m

State Standard: 4:36.9/4:37.14

Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 11

Tuesday Top Ten Marks From Penn Kyle Brazeil Apr 30, 2013

MileSplit NY - We're finally recovering from a long weekend of the top track and field activity there could be found.  Below, you will find our Top Ten Moments for New Yorkers at the Penn Relays.  There were plenty more to speak of, like both New Rochelle and Mount St. Michaels making their respective finals of the 4x100m, but these were our favorites.  And, for the track buff's in all of us, we've included a trivia question at the bottom to boot.  Enjoy!

Tuesday Top Ten Reasons Why the Penn Relays Rock Apr 23, 2013

http://media.tumblr.com/6f448e7799d76b2b0388c8d582d8de8b/tumblr_inline_mlpa236ilW1qz4rgp.jpgWith 18,000 athletes expected to compete across three days of action, The Penn Relays, at least in terms of participants, can lay claim to be the world’s biggest annual athletics event. SPIKES offers ten reasons why the event, which starts on Thursday 25th April, is such an overwhelming success. 1. History makers First run in 1895, the event is the oldest uninterrupted collegiate meet in the US. Relays took place before the advent of this event but there is little doubt that the concept took place and flourished because of the Penn Relays. The meet is also credited with providing the genesis of the relay exchange zone, as well as the use of a loudspeaker replacing the megaphone to inform the crowd. 2. Spirit of the relay Relays are at the very heart of the meeting, and this provides its enduring charm and appeal. As Penn Relays meet director Dave Johnson says: “It brings a different level of crowd response, because you are rooting for an entire team rather than just an individual. “You are supporting a particular country or school, and this brings a heightened sense of awareness and more energy.” 3. Big crowd Around 110,000 people are expected across three days of action at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field, where the capacity is a little over 52,000. With 45,000 expected on the Saturday, the third and final day, the Penn Relays is consistently among the best attended annual athletics events on the planet.  “We have created an event whereby parents bring their children, children then bring their children and we create a family event,” says Johnson. “It also becomes an annual reunion for people who went to school and ran together.” Day and night: Thursday racing starts at 10am and finishes around 11pm 4. P-A-R-T-Y The city of Philadelphia embraces the event, even if some people chose to just enjoy one of the many post-meet parties scattered across the city. “Some people never even see the stadium,” says Johnson. “They just attend the parties. Almost every small bar is hosting some party for a group and friends. There are little pockets of Penn Relays-related activities all over the place.” 5. Athletics athletics athletics If you like your athletics, then no event compares with the Penn Relays. Some 430 races are run across three days, with the first day schedule opening at 10am and ending close to midnight. For early birds and race walking devotees, the final day opens with the walks at 7am and concludes at 6pm: with the grandly named College Men’s 4x400m Championship of America. Manna from heaven for track fans everywhere. 6. Inter-generation game Competitions for middle and high school kids, college athletes, elite athletes and even masters make the Penn Relays an event for all ages. “Olympic champions are rubbing shoulders with high school kids, and the thrill people can get from this is incalculable,” says Johnson. “The chance for a 17 or 18-year-old kid to run in front of 35,000 or 40,000 people is amazing. When are most of them ever going to get to chance to do that in their lives again?” 7. Star names The event has attracted a cast list of all-time greats, like Jim Thorpe, Paavo Nurmi, Jesse Owens, Roger Bannister and Carl Lewis. Since 2000 the USA v Rest of the World concept has been introduced, with Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix and Sanya-Richards Ross all competing in the historic three-day event, which always concludes on the last Saturday in April. 8. Star names of tomorrow The Penn Relays have helped launch the career of sprinters like world  champion Yohan Blake, who competed as a high school athlete. Johnson, who has been director of the meeting since 1996, says that Blake featured in his favourite ever Penn Relays race back in 2007. “It was the High School boys 4x400m and he anchored for St Jago with Bryshon Nellum anchoring for Long Beach Poly. There was four teams in the race and each one of them, at one time or another, took the lead. “I think they both ran 45.2 [relays legs], with Poly prevailing. We have a great loudspeaker system but from the first turn of the race you could not hear the PA. The crowd noise was ongoing for more than three minutes.” 9. Global flavour  For this year’s event, teams are entered from 35 US states and more than 10 nations will be sending collegiate and high school teams. Taking into consideration athletes who will compete for the ‘Rest of the World’ team, and foreign students competing for US colleges, Johnson says, “We expect athletes from between three to four dozen nations will feature in the 2013 Penn Relays.” 10. TV coverage The small screen embraces the event, with NBC TV showing live coverage of the final day of the event between 1-3pm, with NBC Universal showing continued coverage from 3-5pm. The Penn Relays website also show live web streaming on a pay-per-view basis. (via SPIKESMAG.COM)

Tuesday Top Ten Meets We're Covering This Spring Kyle Brazeil Apr 02, 2013

MileSplit NY - It may be the calm before the storm in terms of meet coverage, but this spring looks packed with big stages for some big performances.  If the Indoor season was any indication, prepare for one of the fastest springs ever.   Here are ten places you'll want to keep your eyes on.

Tuesday Top Ten Features Of The MileSplit Network Kyle Brazeil Mar 26, 2013

MileSplit NY - This Tuesday Top 10 is a little bit of a lesson for those unfamiliar with the true depth of the MileSplit system.  We are far deeper than a results aggregate, and the utilities are endless.  We've laid out for you the ten best features we have built into our system, and we leave you to explore their options.  Enjoy!

Tuesday Top Ten Marks NY Will Need To Catch Up To Kyle Brazeil Mar 18, 2013

MileSplit NY - While we may have been twiddling our thumbs waiting for our heat at the Armory, some athletes down south have decided  this indoor business was not for them.  The southern regions of the country start their Outdoor season remarkably early by our standard, ie January, and it tends to give them a little bit of a head start.  However, just as the cliche goes, it's not where you start, it's where you finish.  Today's Top Ten will show you where the catching up may be a little harder to do.

Early Tuesday Top Ten - Records Revisited Kyle Brazeil Mar 11, 2013

MileSplit NY - It's been a huge weekend, and we'll have our full meet recap for you out tomorrow, complete with photos, interviews, results, everything.  In the meantime, lets look back at the season that just ended, see how many of our State Records we predicted may go down actually did.

Want the answer?  Well, ten went down, but only 1 of them we predicted.  Back then, we didn't know which events Mary Cain would run in, or how fast Sabrina Southerland could truly get.  Check out all the new State Records below, 10 to be exact.  And don't close the books just yet.  There is still one more Indoor meet left, a youth meet at the Armory, which may see some last minute attempts to take down just a few more records.

Tuesday Top Ten Events To Watch At Nationals Kyle Brazeil Mar 05, 2013

MileSplit NY - The three day track extraganza we call New Balance Indoor Nationals is about to start at the New Balance Armory Track And Field Center in Manhattan, New York.  We'll be there with the best coverage around, including live webcasts, constantly flowing tweets, interviews, and pictures.  Accept no substitutes as we bring you up to speed on what may be the best races of the day.  This week's Tuesday Top Ten serves as a preview of the meet to be.  And yes, to answer the most important question to most, our cover picture is just a preview of what the bags look like this year.

Tuesday Top Ten Things To Love About The Armory Feb 19, 2013

If you took a friend who was uninitiated in the ways of New York track and field, stood them on the corner of 168th St. and Broadway in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and told them that they were within sight of one of America's premier "hotbeds" of the sport, they'd probably look at you like you may have missed the pole vault pit a few times too many. And in all fairness, it does seem an unlikely place for such a thing. The urban landscape that would fill their eyes with brick, concrete and steel wouldn't easily lend itself to visions of a mass of well-conditioned young people, wearing a veritable rainbow of school colors, running and jumping and throwing.

Tuesday Top Ten Reasons HS Track Is No Longer A Niche Sport Kyle Brazeil Feb 11, 2013

It looks to be a banner week for track and field, with the inclusion of Millrose's stellar field, among new National Leading Times around the country.  For this week's Tuesday Top Ten, we look at the brand that has been given to Track and Field for years: a niche sport.  Hopefully the following reasons can demonstrate that that view is outdated, and we may be more mainstream than ever.  Check it out below!

Tuesday Top Ten Steps To Finding The Right College Kyle Brazeil Feb 05, 2013

Tuesday Top Ten Hardest State Records To Beat Kyle Brazeil Jan 21, 2013

MileSplit HQ - As another Tuesday rolls around here in New York, another Top Ten does as well.  Our subject matter was influenced by the recent tidbit released that junior Mary Cain will be making an attempt on the National Record in the Mile at the New Balance Games this wekeend.  As a state record would fall in the process, we thought it prudent to look at the Top Ten Indoor State Records Hardest To Break.  We give you a blast from the past, as we take a look at some of the marks that may shock you.  We had so many, that we may have cheated a little, and added in an honorable mention section.  And, just for fun, we've also included the Top Five Records That May Be Next To Go.  So let the bug of anticipation rise up, as we check out some of our past greats.

Tuesday Top Ten New Faces To Know Kyle Brazeil Jan 15, 2013

MileSplit HQ - Today's Top Ten is all about the new athletes to hit the top.  To qualify, you must have been flying "under the radar", either not competing in XC, or showing big improvements over the last year.  The following are our picks for the Top Ten New Faces To Make The Headlines.

Tuesday Top Ten Moments At The Armory Kyle Brazeil Jan 08, 2013

MileSplit HQ - It's a busy day in the New York Track world, and gave us a great  idea for our Tuesday Top Ten.  But before we get to that, we have a couple of cool announcements.  First, the Armory announced today that The Millrose Games will be live broadcast on ESPN3, as well as tape delayed on ESPN.  A major step in track and field publicity, we welcome the exposure for our athletes.  Secondly, here at MileSplit NY, we've been quietly updating older and older results, in aims to have at least all state records into our rankings by the State Meet.  Finally, as ArmoryTrack and MileSplit NY begin to work more hand-in-hand, we thought there would be no better time than to bring back the Armory's list of the Top 100 moments at the Armory.  Below, you can find a video listing the accomplishments, and for the really interested, we've included the Top 100 moments, as chronicled in 2008.  We know there have been great moments since, but we'll save that for another Tuesday.  As for now, enjoy the history lesson, and see if you can pick out some familiar names.
