Boys Individual Race
Breakdown: Unlike the girls affair, this race could be very close. Mason Gatewood took care of business at the Manhattan Invitational, winning the race by three seconds. However, since then, Silas Derfel nearly matched that Manhattan winning Speed Rating, with his win at the NYSPHSAA Championship. Put Derfel on solid ground, and he may actually have pulled away from Gatewood. And yet, Gatewood ran that mark back in early October. It's hard to gauge how much fitness the CHSAA star has gained since then, as his last few outings have been relaxed efforts.
Right in the mix is also Class B's Parker Stokes, Aidan Gillooley, and Tyler Berg. The trio went 2, 3, 4 at the State Meet last weekend, and are all capable of more. Stokes in particular, has shown his threat, as he comes in with the Season's Best Speed Rating of the season, back from his Sectional Championship. I wouldn't underestimate him with the right race conditions.
If Gatewood was to win, he would become only the fourth ever athlete from the CHSAA to ever win, and fifth ever athlete not from NYSPHSAA to win. Saint Anthony's is already well represented, with John Gregorek winning the race in 1976 and 77. In addition, Saint Anthony's took home the title in 2000 with Charlie Millioen. Bishop Ford added another for the Catholics with Chris Gonzalez in 1991, and the NYSAIS grabbed theirs in 2010 with Packer Collegiate's Eddie Owens.
