This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Any other team besides reigning national and state Class A champ Fayetteville-Manlius would be in tough shape if it lost three seniors like last year's trio of Kaitlyn Neal, Sam Levy, and Jenna Farrell, but the Hornets just see it as an opportunity to put together another unique group of runners for another national title run for what would be the girls' team's 10th crown. With four returning runners solidly above the 130 TR mark including States champ Claire Walters and her sister Rebecca along with Palmer Madsen and Sophie Ryan, the Hornets just need a solid 5th runner up in the same territory, with a lead candidate being Phoebe White. The truly scary issue for all of FM's challengers on a state or national level is that none of those top 5 Hornets are seniors, and two are freshmen. A senior presence could come from Christy Berge, Reilly Madsen, or Keita Peden if necessary, but the team is well stocked for years to come. We ran out of newly superlative things to say about FM years ago, so now it's just a matter of sitting back and watching a run to an almost perfect 10.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Rated
in the top 5 in the nation with a young team led by the most dynamic
freshman in the state, Saratoga should be sitting pretty in the
monstrously tough S2-A. The Blue Streaks have a relatively comfortable
margin over a half dozen challengers, none of whom can field a team like
the one with Kelsey Chmiel on the lead and Peyton Engborg and Paris
Fenoff and a host of viable candidates for the 4-7 positions. Saratoga
will also be favored to win a third straight Federation title. But the
big stumbling block down the road is a trio of meets running from States
to NXN-NY to NXN Nationals where Fayetteville-Manlius runs always at
least a little ways ahead, with the last loss by the Hornets to the Blue
Streaks coming at Manhattan ten years ago. With the lineup Saratoga has
shaping up this year though, a breakthrough should come that would at
least get the team back into the top 3 at Nationals for the first time
since 2011. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

North Rockland Red Raiders Katelyn Tuohy and Alex Harris speed to a 1st and 3rd at the Section 1 Class A meet on the way to a win there as part of a journey that would take the team for the first time out to Portland for NXN and a top 10 finish.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
North
Rockland had a breakout year behind Katelyn Tuohy and Alex Harris last
season as the team finished in the top 3 in the state for the first time
and rode the wave to a 10th place finish at Nationals. Now the big
trick is to keep the momentum going on a team that does not have the
depth of Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga and will have a top 5 spot to
fill with the departure of Claire Tantillo. Tuohy's freshmen sidekick
Haleigh Morales made big strides at the end of the year solidifying the
top 3 for the Red Raiders, and juniors Kerry O'Connor and Noelle Feeney
are hoping to bump up the team's strength in the 4-5 positions for a
squad that seems to have a good hold on the S1-A crown ahead of Suffern.
The Red Raiders moved up about 25 places from last year's preseason
national projections on Tully Runners, and that is a very good sign.

| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
If there is a team for Saratoga to especially keep an eye on in the battle for the S2-A crown, it is a young and developing Guilderland squad that returns its top 4 from last year and with essentially the same strength rating as it ended 2015 with. Freshman frontrunner Emily Bini continues to move into the elite of Class A runners and is backed by other up-and-coming runners like Olivia Fanshawe, Christine Fish, and Erin Miceli who helped the Flying Dutchmen to a top 5 Federations finish. Guilderland is not yet at Saratoga's level, but there is definitely a lot of potential here.

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Kelly Bowdy (1977, A-2nd), Kate Rosettie (2007, AA-9th), Jessica Lawson (2013, B-1st) (2014, A-2nd) (2015, A-2nd)
Last Year's Summary: 10th in Federations, 2nd in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
It's
never a bad thing to have the state's top runner leading a team, and
the Hawks will have Jessica Lawson back for her senior year after she
picked up a few big wins last year at Manhattan and Federation, but you
know that there is a States A title one she would like to add to the
tally, along with maybe a top 5 finish at Foot Locker. Without her
Elmira shadow Abbey Wheeler around, Lawsom may feel a little lost in at
least the local meets, but she will have a younger Corning squad
including Kate Mertus, Emily Niu, and Alivia Collins that will give the
Hawks the favorite's mantle to regain the S4-A crown it won two years
ago. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
