Meet Info
The New York State Outdoor Championships are headed to Section 9's Middletown High School. Events kick off on Friday, June 7th shortly after noontime, with all times being a bit approximate. Athletes from the NYSPHSAA public schools, CHSAA NYC-area Catholic schools, PSAL NYC-area public schools, and the NYSAIS NYC-area private schools will be meeting to see who can run and jump and throw the fastest and furthest.

At States, both the boys and girls have a total of 19 events to vie in, with 16 being individual competitions and three featuring relay squads. The action is further broken down between the Division 1 championships for the big schools (600 seed size and up) and Division 2 championships for smaller schools. In some events like long-distance races, 4x800m relay, pentathlon, high jump and pole vault, the D1 and D2 athletes compete together to decide the division crowns and the overall federation titles. In the rest of the events, the D1 and D2 athletes compete separately for division championships, and then the top 8 performers are selected to compete for the overall title, most of which are decided on Saturday. So yeah, you can potentially finish 7th in the D1 action and go on to win the overall State championship.

To be honest, States is a mixed bag of great action and big drama that is a bit eclipsed by the specter of all the top teams and athletes that can't be there, either because they're the second and fourth best relay teams in the state but have the top dog in their conference, or the coach would prefer to have the team pointed for Nationals, or you're last year's States highlighter who has subsequently become unattached. But for all who make the trip up to Middletown, be prepared for a totally exhausting day of screaming and pandemonium and maybe that rare big upset.

Synopsis of 2012's Action
The biggest story of the meet was to be the boys 1600m, where Section 3 titans Nick Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Zavon Watkins (Liverpool) were cued up to have one of the tightest races of the meet.  The race played out fast, leading to a state record for Ryan.  Other notable marks included battles in the pole vault between Greg Gallagher (Iona) and Mike Brunoforte (St. Anthony's), and huge jump in the Long Jump pits by Desmond Mobley.  Back to the track, Kadesh Roberts of Bay Shore was solidifying himself as the top 400m hurdler in the state, and the 4x800m relay from Collegiate came dangerously close to breaking 7:40.00.

Boys Events
The standings below for each of the 19 events contested at States lists the top overall competitors and then provides the top 6 competitors for the Division 1 and Division 2 contests. The States results generally hew close to the listed projections.  Between the federation, Division 1 and Division 2 titles to hand out, there are a lot of great contests to follow. And in each one of them, when the sweat has dried and the dust has settled, there will be one athlete or team left standing on the winner's podium.
