New York State XC Rankings
End of Year Rankings for 2012
Note: Many weeks down the road since the last rankings for the finals of the 2012 season's XC, we are making an attempt to provide a general summary of the team rankings. The Overall and Class groups were expanded to include more teams in tribute to all the work done by teams and runners. In trying to sort out the merits of each team's season record, the weighting factors used were: a) performance at States \ NYC Conference and Nationals for qualifying teams, b) performance at Federation meet for selected teams, c) performance at NXN-NY for participating teams, d) performance at Sectionals or LI division meets, e) overall year's performance at major invitationals, f) Tully Runner speed rating team averages, g) cool factor of uniforms. Note that Sections 8 and 11 were not able to hold State Qualifier meets this year due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and teams for States were selected from results at earlier conference\division meets, which are given less weight as these meets are not necessarily good predictors for Sectional champions (S8 girls A and S11 boys A States teams in 2011 were not divisional winners). TR averages are taken from November 19 compilations after Feds.
Cheers to all on another great season.

| Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Despite the huge gap in TR average and even in light of unfortunate falls at Nationals, Saratoga was the clear top team in Class A this year after taking the States race --4th title overall and first since 2005 -- and finishing four spots better at NXN in Portland. Fayetteville-Manlius had the big numbers for the second spot, and CHSAA champ St. Anthony's put together the next best record in late season meets. The next three spots between Arlington, Northport, and Warwick Valley could be sorted different ways depending on how you weight the late season meets, but that's how I see it. | ||||
| Kyle's Comments: | I'm not so convinced in the claim that Saratoga was a clear favorite. The top two teams each have a victory over eachother, Saratoga at States, and FM at Regionals. Based on conditions, I consider Nationals to be a wash (something all runners needed to do for days after that mudfest). After that it is again a toss up, depending on what you consider a championship race. CHSAA may run harder in feds than it has to at intersectionals, so which do you weigh more? An interesting dilemma. | ||||

| Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons took the States Class B crown by a decent margin and then pretty much shut it down. East Aurora edged out Pittsford-Mendon for the States runner-up spot by 5 points and then continued on with strong showings at Feds and especially at NXN-NY. Franklin Academy won the battle for 4th place at States by 1 point over Tappan Zee, who beat out a late-season charging Maine-Endwell also by 1 point. Shoreham-Wading River was the team that fell back most at States following the difficult aftermath of Sandy. | ||||
| Kyle's Comments: | NDBG was the story of Class B this year, running themselves to their first state title by a clear margin. What will be interesting now is to see how they transfer that talent onto the track, but I can see some exceptional milers and steeplers in their future. | ||||

| Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Collegiate proved itself the strongest of the Class C teams with super performances at Feds and NXN-NY. Pawling captured that elusive first States title by a good margin over Fonda-Fultonville and then was in luck with 13th place finishes at Feds and NXN-NY. Hannibal won a fairly close contest with Alden for 3rd place at States, and Trumansburg came on strong at the end of the season to take 5th at States. Rhinebeck fell far back at States following injuries but still had a strong season. Of the sectional runner-up teams, Maple Hill and Bronxville had the best finishes. |
||||
| Kyle's Comments: | Pawling was another success story at the state level, but AIS outsiders Collegiate had a top pair that was hard to beat. Utilizing Buckley and Pompilj sparingly in the season, both popped big times in the later season. | ||||

| Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Mount Academy had a little closer battle than expected with Barker for the State title but still came away with the win in the team's first year of existence. Beaver River finished the year as expected in 3rd at States, while Greenwich need a tie-breaker to hold off a surprising Ticonderoga team for 4th place. Caledonia-Mumford came out of Section 5 and Haldane from section 1 and also were surprises at States as they moved up to 6th and 7th. Maple Grove was by far the strongest of the non-States qualifiers as it came up a little short against Barker in Section 6. | ||||
| Kyle's Comments: | It was a year of first and lasts for the Mount Academy. First year on the circuit, first state title. But it will also be the last time they compete in Class D, as next year they will move up to Class C. That shouldn't worry them, however, as their incredible marks should make them quite formidable there as well. | ||||
