2021 NYSPHSAA Boys State Championship Meet Preview

Boys Class A - Individuals

What The Numbers Say:

Call it an upstate affair. The Top 6 athletes projected for the State Meet all hail from Sections 2,3,4,5, so they'll feel right at home in Chenango. The individual rankings now, look very different than they did by Pre-States, and even moreso at McQuaid.

Peter McMahon has been getting better every week. He had a breakout performance at his local league meet, then repeated his win at Sectionals. Back at McQuaid, he was only tenth in the field, a good ten speed rating points behind his current fitness. Now, he's the third highest rated athlete in the State.

Both Ryan Bush and Jack Gregorski were ahead of McMahon at that McQuaid race. Between the pair, they have traded off wins. Bush ran the better race at McQuaid, but Gregorski bested him in the merge at Chenango Valley for Pre-States.

The variability puts all three dead-locked as the favorites heading into the race. McMahon gets the edge because his highest rating was the most recent, but everyone is so close, that edge will fade as soon as the gun goes off.

What Can Change:

West Genesee has only one top ten finish back in 2009
Saratoga has two Individual State Titles, with a 20 year gap between the pair, 1998 and 2018.
Corning's top finisher is a third place from 2017. Their first top ten finish was in 1967
