Boys Individual Race
Breakdown: Halfway through the race, and there had yet to be any clear indication of who would be in title contention. The pack was holding strong, and all the major players were there. At two miles, an impressive surge by Class D State Champ Kal Lewis spurred the race along. Four athletes broke away. Chief among them were Mason Gatewood and Aidan Gillooley. The pair were shoulder to shoulder coming down the backhills. And then it happened. As the rain began to came down, the hills became slick. Gillooley took a fall, but popped back up. In a race so close in contention, it opened up hole for Gatewood.
But just as soon as the hole opened up, Gillooley was back on his feet, and closing on the lead. Within two minutes, the pair were on equal footing again, although Gillooley all the more tired for it. The pair came onto the final field, and Gatewood pulled away. Early race leader Silas Derfel saw his opportunity, and pushed into second. On the final stretch, Gatewood continued to hammer the pace, and came across the line victorious.
Gatewood is the third athlete from Saint Anthony's under 16mins at Bowdoin, and joins two other teammates as Federation Individual Champions.
