New York State XC Rankings
Following Week of Saturday, October 13
Note: Composing the rankings after the Manhattan Invitational is always a little complex because of the speed ratings boost that teams and runners appear to get there on the 2.5 mile course. Part of the boost is due to the higher level of competition, but the top 10 runners on the girls' side who had run previous races this year saw an average 6.3 TR point gain from their previous races, which is not a usual situation during the season, though it is pretty normal for Manhattan results through the years. The speed ratings are most accurately built for 5K courses. So if your team went to Manhattan and just jumped its TR ratings well over another team that did not and the rankings don't seem to be giving full credit by the TRs, that's why.

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | It was an historic weekend as Fayetteville-Manlius opened its season at Manhattan and suffered it's first loss in six years, as it fell by 9 points to Delaware rival Tatnall without Jillian Fanning in the lineup. The Hornets still top the state and Class A rankings, but its margin over the other teams is the smallest it has been since winning its first state title in 2006. Section 5 teams Rush-Henrietta and Penfield both had big wins in races at Manhattan and Seneca respectively to hold down the 3rd and 4th spots. Warwick and Megan Reilly had the biggest TR jumps on the day, and the Wildcats move into the top 5. Suffern also had a big jump after a win at Manhattan. The top performance by a Class A team in the big Burnt Hills 3 race belonged to Hilton, which now camps out in the 16th spot. NYC Catholic school Kellenberg also moves into the rankings with a nice performance at Manhattan.
Kyle's Comments: |
FM's loss at Manhattan can be viewed in two ways. The pessimist can look at it and say the win streak is over. I prefer to look at it and think, they managed to still be the top team in the state despite losing their top runner. With Fanning's eventual return (she'll have her 6 meets by sectionals), the lead should increase. In other news, Warwick's Reilly has really come into her own, leading her team to impressive finishes. I can see them as the team on the rise. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Team TR scores started swelling up as the postseason nears. Holy Names had a strong race the Manhattan Eastern States race but narrowly missed beating out PA rival Pennsbury for 3rd. East Aurora continues to win and push its TR up behind Marta McLaughlin, Megan Baritot, and Mackenzie Donahue, while Burnt Hills after a big win in its Burnt Hills-3 race also has a top trio of Emily Digman, Jordan Casey, and Meagan Roecker. Pearl River and Nanuet rudely dragged their turf fight into the reserved top 5 area as they continue their season-long struggle after big performances at Manhattan. Queensbury got a nice win at Manhattan, but right behind it is the reigning champ North Shore team that put up big numbers at Burnt Hills though it still is without the services of Jessica Donohue.
Kyle's Comments: |
Some shakeup in Class B as North Shore has a good day, and East Aurora jumps up as well. The biggest story is the close battles between Pearl River and Nanuet in Section 1. Nanuet beat Pearl River in their league meet, but Pearl River may be more consistent in a race with larger fields. The bid for states really is up for grabs between the pair. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Bronxville continues to sit pretty at the top of the Class C rankings after a dominating performance by Mary Cain and the team in the Manhattan A race. Tully also scored high at its host meet and moved past idle Section 3 rival Skaneateles. Pawling, Maple Hill, and Schuylerville also posted victories and are securely in the top 10. Three teams making big moves upward during the week were Cazenovia, Mattituck, and Adirondack after strong performances that showed the teams have a decent amount of depth.
Kyle's Comments: |
Despite not running Eastern's, the Bronco's would have placed in the top 5 for the race had they ran. Section 3 will have a tight race as Tully is looking to meet up with rivals Skaneateles. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Suddenly the battle in Class D is starting to get a little hotter after Greenwich's solid showing in the Manhattan-D race that got a boost from the return of Sarah Lapham. South Lewis also looks to get up nearer to Maple Grove and Greenwich after a win at Rome, but Sauquoit Valley appears to be a challenger for the Section 3-D title. A few of the ranked teams are still having some issues getting a solid showing in the 5th spot.
Kyle's Comments: |
A return to racing for some of Greenwich girls boost up their rankings, but it is still Maple Grove who is sitting pretty at the top. |
