One week after a dominant performance at the New York State Meet, Senior Maggie McCormick (Bay Shore) had a little more left to give.
At the State Meet, McCormick opted for the 1500m, where she set the State Leader (and Top 10 All-Time mark) a week before in 4:19.01. In Webster, McCormick led from the gun, and was unmatched, clocking a 4:17.87, the third best in Meet History, and the fifth fastest mark by a New Yorker ever.
Add one more week, and McCormick entered Nationals at twice the distance, opening her weekend in the Championship 2 Mile. There, she let the lead pack go, led by Indoor phenom Katy Zang (Ashville, OH) for the better part of a mile and a half. With the lap count diminishing, she began to hunt the leaders, moving to second when the bell lap run. There, she unleashed a powerful 67-second last lap, passing the Indoor National Record Holder, and capturing the National Title.
The clock read 9:50.81.
That stands as a new Meet Record, en route to beating the current National Leader in Averi Lowen (Bowdon, GA) and the Indoor National Record Holder Katy Zang (Teays Valley, OH) head-to-head.
That's also a new New York State Record.
It betters the converted 3200m time set by Katelyn Tuohy (North Rockland), when she ran 9:47.88 at the Loucks Games in 2018. That mark converts to 9:51.29. Appropriately, it also betters the Senior Class State Record set by Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall) at this same meet in 2011, when she ran 9:54.22.
McCormick's 3000m split was 9:15.22, which now also moves her to NY-3 All-Time there too.

Her weekend isn't done, either. She'll return for the Mile tomorrow, at 6:07pm. Stay tuned.
