There is an opportunity for both meet and course records to fall tomorrow. The boys course record, of 16:37.6 was set in 2007 by Steven Challacombe from Newburgh. The girls mark of 18:50.1 was established in 2009 when Clarkstown South's Jessica Tobin crossed the line in first, after a thrilling step for step battle with Nick Nesi from Pelham.
The lead pack in the boys race should stay together for a major portion of the race. Tom Higgins from Westlake likes to bolt to the front and break away in his races. He will likely have plenty of company as there will be a group determined not to allow any early breakaways. There will not be a clear favorite tomorrow as more that 4 listed athletes have real chances to bring home the championship trophy awarded to the top finisher
In the boys team race, it will surely come down to which team has the best performing # 4, 5 and 6 runners as no team has proved to be above the others.
While Nicki Nesi will be in the race again and has the # 2 time, all time, of 18:58 she will have all she can handle with the talented Gianna Frontera, from Newburgh. Expect a much smaller lead pack from the ladies but there will be a big battle for the top 10 places.
The girls team championship looks right now to be a fight between Lakeland/Panas and Hackley, but several teams could spoil their chances for the trophies.
While there is just one large varsity race, there is a special trophy awarded to the highest finishing small schools division team. Hackley appears to be the clear favorite in the girls race. In the boys contest, Rye Neck should battle with Hackley for the honors.
