State of the Action: Like the girls, all the big names from XC were in the double distance, with a few new ones sprinkled in for good measure. As the gun went off, it became clear this wasn't going to be a kickers race. Aidan Tooker, who was a kicker himself the year before, pushed from the gun. Ryan Kutch tucked in nicely behind him. A gap began to grow, and soon Ben Petrella and Freddie Bucholtz had too separated from the pack, yet still a gap behind the leaders. Tooker led the race strong, through 800m at 2:12, and then 4:27 for 1600m. Petrella and Buckholtz continued to power along in third and fourth, while Kutch started to fall off with 800m to go. Petrella saw the move, and having dropped Buckholtz, began to increase his cadence. Petrella began to click off 33 and 34second laps to Kutch's 35. But it was all Tooker out front, who pushed through the lapped field. He came to notice Petrella was closing, the gap down to five seconds, and surged one final time, to a new State Meet Record. Kutch came back on Petrella to kick past in the last lap for second.
