Section 6 Spotlight: Sophia Tasselmyer, East Aurora

2014 Section VI XC State Qualifiers

Sunshine Park, West Seneca NY

What do you enjoy about your event?
Cross country is definitely more exciting than track because the course is always changing, but I enjoy the competitive atmosphere of championship track meets.

What has been the highlight in your running/throwing/jumping career thus far?
Qualifying for NXN was an unreal experience. Also, winning Class C states individually and with my team by only three points. I'll have to admit, it felt pretty good to end Bronxville's winning streak.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you while competing?
The day before the Federation meet, we had a "synergy circle" on the starting line. Some of the other girls teams were so confused.

What thoughts run through your head while competing?
Sometimes I sing to myself. In the bigger meets, I worry about cramping up and how close other people are to me.

What other sports do you enjoy?
I played basketball for 6 years and used to take swim lessons.

What is your favorite food?
Mac 'n' cheese and Coca~Cola are my favorite foods before a race!

What is one of your favorite movies?
I watch a lot of movies but "The Blind Side", "Aquamarine", and "Frozen" are some of my favorites.

What would be your ideal vacation?
I love going to Hilton Head with my family. I run a race there every 4th of July and it's always really hot.

Who is your role model and why?
My role models are my parents because as I grew up, they instilled the value of work ethic and that hard work does really pay off. I wouldn't be where I am today without the many sacrifices they have made for me.

What do you do to relax?
I like to watch Netflix, listen to music, and read.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Hopefully, I'll FINALLY own a dog and be married with a family. And of course, I still plan to be running.
