Section 6 Spotlight: Brandon Shaffer, Williamsville South

2014 Town of Amherst XC Championships

What do you enjoy about your event?
I enjoy the thrill of competing with others and pushing myself to achieve a new personal best. I also enjoy making new friends and the health benefits of running!

What has been the highlight in your running/throwing/jumping career thus far?
The highlights of my career have been breaking a minute in the 400m in outdoor and breaking 19 minutes in the XC 5k.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you while competing?
There haven’t been too many “funny” occurrences while I compete, but the funniest has probably been listening to other runners complain about running as a race starts. It never fails to lighten the mood!

What thoughts run through your head while competing?
On a good race, I try to encourage myself to pick it up and go even faster.

What other sports do you enjoy?
I also enjoy Frisbee every now and then.

What is your favorite food?
Anything Italian, especially pasta!

What is one of your favorite movies?
I have so many to choose from but I would have to say my current favorite is "Singin’ in the Rain." I watched it in film study recently and it’s just such a good movie!

What would be your ideal vacation?
My favorite vacation spots are Cape Cod and California. Opposite coasts, but they are both by the ocean and so much fun to be in.

Who is your role model and why?
Many professional athletes such as David Rudisha and Kirani James inspire me to achieve my best, but I think that my mother is my top role model. She’s happy and successful in her life and is so supportive.

What do you do to relax?
To relax I like to either watch a movie or read a good book or magazine.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
I see myself with a career in the nutritional field and still running for fun and competition.
