Section 6 Spotlight: Jack Jibb, Niagara-Wheatfield

2012 NYSPHSAA XC Championships
Elma Meadows

What do you enjoy about your event?
Making the competition suffer. Just joking...a little. I really like pushing myself and trying out different strategies. My motto is “If you can’t win, make it hard for others.”

What has been the highlight in your running/throwing/jumping career thus far?
Breaking 17 minutes in a 5k felt really good but every time I take some time off is a highlight.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you while competing?
I haven’t really had any funny things happen to me while competing, however when I was training on my bike, I got a flat tire, and I found that the cause of it was a broken piece of a puncture repair kit. The irony was unbearable!

What thoughts run through your head while competing?
Mainly tactics, how to turn each corner, where everyone is, and how much energy it looks like everyone else has left.

What other sports do you enjoy?
I enjoy most endurance sports, like swimming, cycling, and triathlons.

What is your favorite food?
This is a tough one, I do like anything with garlic in it, but I also like whole wheat pasta with lots of butter.

What is one of your favorite movies?
I would have to say "Chariots of Fire", as this inspired me the most, and it was the most motivating.

What would be your ideal vacation?
To go to Europe and perhaps participate in a few races. This past Summer I was lucky enough to go to London and watch the Olympics. Whilst I was there, I entered the Medway Mile and won!

Who is your role model and why?
Quite a few people inspire me, but my main inspiration for running comes from some of the greatest Olympians, such as Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett, and Mo Farah….can you tell I’m British!

What do you do to relax?
It depends. During a race, I just listen to my own rhythm, and focus on loosening the muscles I do not use. The night before a race, I will listen to relaxing music.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
In 20 years, I will hopefully be making a good living with a career in some sort of science related field. I hope I am still running and participating in Triathlons too.
