NYT&F Battle of the Years - Leaders Showdown 2008-2015

. . . . . . Group 6: Vertical Jumps and Vaults

A misplaced elbow or heel may be all that keeps an athlete from attaining the heights of victory after doing everything else right, and all the teams need to make sure they take care of business in the verticals

The top high jumpers strive for the 7' height on the guys' side and the 6' height on the girls' in the high jump, and the 17' mark for the boys and 13' one for the girls in the pole vault, but only Tyrek English got to it outdoors during this period, though Jordan Yamoah went to a 17'+ PV indoors when he picked up both the indoor and outdoor state records.

The 2015 team's once huge lead began to dwindle as the 2010 combo of Tyrek English with his 7-0' tops in the HJ and junior Jordan Yamoah's 2nd in the PV cut 11 points of their team's deficit and help them sky into 2nd. The senior Yamoah teamed with a 5th by 2011 HJ co-leaders Alexander Bowen and Lemanuel Mosley (who also led 2011 in the 400m) to put he team in 2nd. 2014's pair of Justin Sicari and James Deutmeyer kept their squad in 4th. Hasani Rathan and Ryan Herera-Murphy picked up 7 points to keep the 2015 team in 1st with five events to go.

A three-way tie for 1st in the high jump spread the points between the 2009 and 2010 squads headed by Cameron Esser and the 2011 squad led by Kelly Titus. A 1st and 8th were enough to move 2010 into the lead over a 2012 squad that picked up 6 points. The big gainer was the 2009 squad that had PV co-leaders Sydnie Leroy and Linda Hadfield teaming with Esser's HJ mark to score 15 points and move into 3rd. 2015 climbed to 4th behind a 13 point contribution from Faith Penny's 4th in the HJ and Catherine Walker's 2nd in the PV.

.

2010 appeared to be opening up a big lead that would nail things down for the Combined title with their powerful relay squads still to go. 2015 was hanging in 2nd only 7 points behind though, so there could still be an exciting finish.
