NYT&F Battle of the Years - Leaders Showdown 2008-2015

. . . . . . Group 3: Long Distance

In the long run we all fade, but we just pray that we don't do it until after we cross the finish line so that our coach doesn't get any evil ideas involving a couple of sets of extra sprints at the end of the next practice

A NY guy leads the nation's 3200m runners this year, and names like Cain, Cuffe, and Lipari have occupied the top spots in the 1500m and 3000m many times in recent years, so you know the competition in the long distance events is going to be brutal. Rumor has it that the junior Alex Hatz boxed his senior self in on the final turn of the 1600 and help another FM guy win the race. His coach was supposedly divided about whether it was a good move.

Mikey Brannigan's winning Loucks lollapalooza in the 3200m along with a 5th place by Conor Lundy in the 1600m sent the 2015 squad into the lead for the first time. 2010 fell 6 points back, and a three-way tie for 3rd developed when the junior Nick Ryan won the 1600m for the 2012 team and his senior self contributed a 3rd place in the 3200 to the 2013 squad along with Eric Holt's 3rd in the 1600, putting them both at 30 along with the 2014 team that got a 2nd in the 3200 from Tim McGowan.

When you have four Mary Cain's and two Aisling Cuffe's competing in the long distance events, you not only are going to have a helluva finish but also a helluva time telling them apart. The two of them in their six incarnations gobbled up the top three places in each event, giving both 2011 and 2012 some big points. But it is 2012 that is in the best shape after Group 3 action as the sophomore Cain took a 2nd and 3rd in her 1500-3000m combo to put her team into a commanding 15 point lead over the 2009 team that picked up 8 points from Megan Patrignelli and Shelby Greany. Senior Cuffe had a 1st and freshman Cain a 2nd for a 2011 squad that started the G3 action in last place and is still far behind. The junior Cain also had a 1st in the 3000m for the 2013 team that moved into 2nd, while 2015's Sammy Watson and Bella Burda combined for 8 points to keep them in 5th.

.

The 2012 team rode a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from Nick Ryan and Mary Cain to extend their lead to 7 points over the 2015 squad, with 2010 lurking dangerously in 3rd at just two points further back.
