New Balance Games To Bring The Heat To The Tri-State This Weekend

Boys Preview

Boys 300m

State of the Action: A tale of two seedings here in the 300m, as the Invitational Section is missing one very notable name. Richard Rose (Boys & Girls) has entered the Varsity division of the event (We speculate it is because the event puts him in a better position to come back on a relay on the schedule), and could very well steal the thunder of the Invitational Section. But there is a lot of lightning ready to strike in that Invitational, as Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon) and Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam) make up your state champions in the 300m over the past two years. They'll have Minkah Fitzpatrick (St. Peters, NJ) between them, who has hit 22.37 in the 200m. Not to be forgotten is US# 9 Christian Blades (Tilden) and US #10 Cody Housen (Mount Vernon).

Invite Boys 600m

State of the Action: US #4 and reigning NYS Champ Luke Germanokos (Lynbrook) will stack his 1:20.60 personal best up against unranked Christian Kildal-Brandt's (West Morris Mendham) personal best of 1:20.50. Also in the mix is US #13 Shavenes Robinson (Boys and Girls), who will look to attack that time as well. Will we see someone else in the nation break that 1:20 barrier?

Boys 1000m

State of the Action: Hiding as the ninth seed is US #2 over 600m, Kareem Jospeh (Clara Barton), fresh off his win at the MLK Games. He could come out and shock the leaders. Mike Grady (East Meadow) is currently US #7 in the event, and comes in as the top seed. The Shenendehowa duo of Mitch Halpern and Colin Rowe both have individual wins to their name this season, and will be looking to lower their season bests, while Colin Abert (Easton Area, PA) will look to channel his XC prowess for a big performance here as well.

Boys Mile

State of the Action: An interesting cross section of Milers will fill out the field this weekend. Luke Gavigan (Tappan Zee) may not have had the race he would have wanted at the Millrose Trials, fading in the final stretches, but he more than made up for it with a 4:13 anchor split at Yale. Aidan Tooker (Saratoga) has a personal best of 4:18, which is around where Marco Pompilj (Collegiate) split for the DMR. Spencer Brown (Wilton, CT) comes in with the next best personal best of 4:11 for the full mile, and will set a tough standard for Gavigan. Kevin James (Cardinal O'Hara, PA) is right in the mix with his 4:12 full-mile personal best. Add in US #2 over 1000m, James Asselmyer (Arlington), and Joe Dragon (High Point, NJ) who took sixth at the Hispanic Games with a 4:15, and you have a field that could push as fast as that aforementioned Hispanic Games field.

Boys 2-Mile

State of the Action: An interesting selection of distance runners make up the field in the 2-Mile. Kieran Tuntivate (Charter, DE) has already wrapped up his Millrose Mile qualification, and now moves on to the longer distance. Joe Dragon (High Point, NJ) is entered in both events, still in search of that distinction. Nick Ciolkowski (McQuaid) is the top entrant from New York, and more than held his own in XC. Craig Corti (Walkill Valley, NJ) ran with Marco Pompilj a few weeks prior, and will be looking to rectify the results at the New Balance Games.

Boys Relays

State of the Action: The boys relays aren't any less loaded than the girls, as every event could bring new national leaders. Newburgh will highlight the 4x200m field as usual, looking to climb even higher on the All-Time lists. They'll run against solid teams in the event in any other year, but Newburgh has proven they are the team to beat in 2015.

Paul Robeson and Tilden take on Penn Wood, PA in the 4x400m. With the National Lead still held by Union Catholic, NJ, everyone will be trying to break under 3:20.

The 4x800m will feature PA's finest in Cardinal O'Hara and Abington, with strong competition from the Garden State.

While the DMR may not have any standout anchor legs on tap, the most even paced squad come away with a challenge for the national lead.
