New Balance Games To Bring The Heat To The Tri-State This Weekend

Girls Preview

Girls 300m

State of the Action: A loaded field will highlight the New Balance Games 300m. US #4 Ariel Strunkey (Taft) enters as the top seed, but D'Jai Baker (Cardozo) has yet to run the event competitively. Brandee' Johnson (Nansemond River, VA) has gone 23.64 in the 200m, and will look to transfer that speed over to the 300m. US #2 Arianne Strunkey (Taft) has elected to run with the professionals, and we'll see if that decision will pay off with a new US #1 performance.

Invite Girls 600m

State of the Action: The three time state champion, Emma Gallagher (Cardozo) will take on the reigning US #1 Amanda Crawford (Paul Robeson) this weekend. Many will look to the rematch playing out in Cornell in only a month and a half. Looking to break up the party will be NJ's Lindsay Kane (Washington Township, NJ), whose noted mile skills have garnered her a PR of 4:53.36.

Girls 1000m

State of the Action: This could get interesting, as the top seed has elected to run in the Sophomore division. Kaitlyn Ryan (Bronxville), fresh off a US #3 in the 600m Thursday night, stands as US #7 in the 1000m from the early season. She is definitely in shape to improve that mark, and will be a hard act to follow in the varsity division. However, Julianna Catania (Egg Harbor, NJ) has hit 2:17 the past two years in the 800m, and again, Kane has that Mile speed, so anything can happen. Chelsea Ogindo (Peekskill) has the top seed, with her 3:00.25 mark from early season.

Girls Mile

State of the Action: It would seem as if the snow has dissuaded early race favorite Jess Lawson (Corning) from attendance, but there is no shortage of talent here. Marin Warner (Holmdel, NJ) boasts the top time in the field, having run 4:49 for 1600m. She'll face Garden State rival Ephiphany Grisbaum (Ocean City), fresh off her 3000m win at the Hispanic Games. Julia Stevenson (Hackley) came away with a sub-5:05 Mile title at the Stanner Games against Paris Calcagnini (Sacred Heart) last weekend, and both have returned to the field. Speaking of winners last weekend, Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, NJ) just won the 3000m title at the Yale Classic, and will look to continue her momentum.

Girls 2-Mile

State of the Action: Can you tell that Saratoga is a strong XC team? They take up five of the entries in the seeded heat, making the odds ever in their favor for a win. Liz Perez (Cardozo) just broke into the 5:10's for the 1600m anchor in the DMR at Yale, and will be looking to hold them off, while Julia Stevenson (Hackley) broke 5:05 in the open Mile at Stanner. Throw in Aaliyah Wajid (Dewitt-Clinton) who has been wrapping up PSAL distance titles, and Natalie Marra (ESM) who has been holding her own upstate, and you have a pretty competitive field.

Girls Relays

State of the Action: There is so much to talk about here. Nansemond River, VA is the top seed in the Girls 4x200m, but they have only run 1:42 this year. They are very capable of big improvements, and they'll need it to catch US #1 Medgar Evers. Even more interesting is the entrant of Benjamin Cardozo, which held the 4x400m, 4x800m, and DMR national leaders until the latter was taken over by Suffern on Wednesday. Throw in Uniondale, and you have one loaded projected final heat.

Speaking of the 4x400m, Paul Robeson is primed to recapture the National Lead. They lead the field by a significant amount, and will attempt to crack the 1:50 barrier.

In the 4x800m, Suffern has to look like the favorite, after their DMR took down the National lead by over 10 seconds. They'll have plenty of company from neighborhing States, but this will go fast.

Finally, in the Invite DMR, Bronxville will return a fresh squad that held the National Lead at Yale before Cardozo broke it. They could very well take the mark right back within the week, as all legs will be running fresh.
