Corning's Dan Gahagan, Quinn Nicholson, and Bryce Derick form a Hawk pack early at the States meet that helped to carry the team to its first championship as frontunner Kevin Moshier placed 5th.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
After winning their first state championship and despite the loss of frontrunner Kevin Moshier, Nathan Prisella, and Grayson Campbell from last year's team, the Hawks look plenty well stocked to battle for all the XC marbles again this year. The top trio of Nicholson, Derick, and Gahagan is rated by far the best in the state, and the junior fourth runner has a last name of Lawson, and speed runs in that family. The one issue that apparently has docked Corning in the preseason national ratings is the need for more power in the 5-6 spots, but the Hawks have options there.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A program with a good history from decades ago, Niskayuna has reemerged and been moving up in the rankings, now showing up at #2 in the preseason Class A ratings even after an 18th place at Federations. The big reason for the big jump this year is that six of the top 7 are back from last year's 2nd place S2-A squad. Tucker, Ross, Hale, Dolan, Quinn, and Favata were all in the top 40 in the S2-A, and that could give the Silver Warriors the edge in Section 2. The question is whether after a 36-year absence from States and with a team that is almost all seniors, can Niskayuna put it all together in 2017 and keep up the strong development for the big breakthrough?

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Fairport fell 5 points short of Penfield in the S5-A battle last year, but this year the Red Raiders return all but one guy from last year's team and appear to have opened a gap on their Sectional rivals. Rouhana is set again as the Fairport frontrunner after two visits to States and a 1st in S5-A last year, and a solid pack of Henretta, state track champion Bulkeley, and Ethan and Matt Abell should propel the Red Raiders to States for the first time in 11 years.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Last year FM finished 2nd again in S3-A but then won NXN-NY to make their ninth straight visit to Nationals and eleventh overall. So the good times could continue to roll in 2017, though the loss of three of last year's top 4 Hornets from NXN-NY might put a big crimp on team success this year. FM has enough back with Otis, Brennan, Tripp, and Perry to be strongly in the mix of the top teams this year, and ironically the Hornets chances for getting back to States has gone up even as the path back to NXN has become more rocky. As always, we'll just have to see what develops by the time November arrives.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Last year Shen went back and forth with Niskayuna for the position of the second team in the S2-A behind Saratoga. That battle should continue this year, but for the top spot in S2-A. Like Niskayuna, Shen returns a largely intact squad and one that has similar numbers to the Silver Warriors. Frontrunner Hislop is only a junior, as is #2 rated guy Langone, so the team has room to develop with a solid senior group of Hickey, Michalek, and Bianconi filling out the ranks.
