NYSPHSAA Recommends Indoor States Moves To Staten Island Ocean Breeze Facility

Albany, NY - On Sunday afternoon, the NYSPHSAA Indoor T&F Committee met via teleconference, and in person at NYSPHSAA headquarters to hear proposals on future facilities for the Indoor State Meet. After an 11-year stint at Cornell University, three bids were heard in the deliberation process. At the meeting's conclusion, the committee recommended a move for the 2017-2019 seasons to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility, located on Staten Island. The facility beat out bids by Ithaca College and the Armory. A final decision will be made on 10/21. There has not yet been a discsussion as to whether the track will or will not be banked.

The Ocean Breeze Facility will open this fall. The facility will become a premier destination for athletic events, drawing competitors from around the region. The elite-level hydraulically-banked competition track will be able to be converted from eight to six lanes, can incline up to 4.5 feet, and will have commanding views of the nearby Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and even the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan. A warm-up area will feature fitness and cardio rooms and a covered parking lot will accommodate 160 cars. NYC Parks worked with track and field professionals and community groups throughout the planning process and continues to work with local partners to explore youth and adult programming opportunities.
