Mansfield, PA - Many New York teams ventured across the border, to attend the Mansfield Mountaineer Invitational. We were on the scene to capture all the action.
Girls Summary:
The 2015 Mountaineer Invitational spectators were witnesses to an amazing performance today. With Race conditions that were very wet and soggy, Elmira's Abby Wheeler ran a race for the record books. Abby ran an unbelievable race from start to finish and when the dust settled she had shattered the course record that includes both all college times and high school girls times.
Abby who had an outstanding spring track season has started off with a big bang and she had this to say, "I thought today I performed well although the course is flat coming out of my first 5k of the season with an 18-sec pr boosts my confidence. The last few months have been very positive, everything in my training and racing is moving forward and it's bringing me closer to my goals. Right now I'm in the best fitness I've ever been in and it's very exciting. I knew coming into this season I was much faster than previous years and I feel like I'm ready to take another jump. This season I want to take that jump and become competitive with the top girls in the country. It's a hefty goal but with this continuous positive feedback it helps me believe in it for myself. Going to practice in a positive environment with teammates and coaches believing in me as well sets me up for success. I'm confident in my training and I can only hope to continue moving forward this season. As a team we performed well. A lot of the younger girls have been stepping up, last year's seniors left big shoes to fill and many of the younger girls have proven that they are capable of getting the job done. The pack is very strong and as long as that pack continues to develop I think we can become competitive in the state".
Coach Ben Cardamone had this to say, "the one thing I keep saying is Abby has always been coming off of a spring track season where she has been dinged up and right now this is the first time in her career that she has not and she is racing and looking better than she's ever looked".
Assistant Coach Andy Brusso had this to add, "I thought todays meet was a great starting point. The girls have a lot of young talent that are just starting to learn about themselves. Lots of room to develop throughout the season. Abbey's race was simply awesome and I'm happy she is finally coming off a healthy spring season".
Even the Meet Host Mike Rohl who is also the Head Coach of Mansfield University had this to say, "Abbey ran a course record today that beat the time of 3 Division II All American. It was a run for the ages"

The Elmira Team victory was very impressive getting 9 girls in the top 20! Coach Ben Cardamone had this to say about his team's performances,
"First of all I want to start with just our team performance and I would say that for right now we are right on schedule. We revamped a lot of things that we did in the past and right now everything seems to be going pretty smooth. We had to deal with some issues that kind of bit us at the end of the year last year in our think our training right now is reflecting that."
2nd Place Addison's Girls team who looked very impressive taking the runner up spot. Megan Long led Addison with a 10th place, finishing with a time of 21:09.02. The Addison Coach Tim Lyons had this to say about his athletes and the course. "This was a perfect way for our student-athletes to start out the season. Most of our kids witnessed a college race for the first time--that was great exposure for them. Many of our athletes put in decent miles this summer, and it showed today. The weather was PERFECT--a little drizzle throughout the day. Enough of a mist to keep things mild. The course was FLAT and FAST. A real confidence booster for our newer runners. Walking away from the meet with two second place team finishes was really exciting for our team. Coach Rohl (Mansfield University) and his crew of athletes put on a great meet today. This was our first time at this meet--what an awesome venue (Lambs Creek Recreation Area)."
