The first few weeks of a new cross country season are always exciting because, just like the famous line about chocolates in Forrest Gump, "You never know what your going to get." Incoming freshmen are the great unknown when it comes to pre-season projections. New runners can turn races on their head from the year before, as seen last year when an 8th grader took home the Girl's Class A State Title. The situation keeps the sport fresh, as you never know what some team might have coming up through the ranks. However, for two new runners this year, coming in unknown is anything but the case. For these two runners, their inclusion in the varsity ranks has been a long time coming.
Lizzy Lucason and Jonah Gorevic have most likely never met. Surely, they may have heard of each other, as both had competed in the same USATF Youth Championships over the past few years. But thousands of athletes come up through the youth scene each year, so what makes them so special? They both find themselves sharing two important distinctions, which are noteworthy in itself: each have had World Records to their name, and both made their Varsity debut this past Saturday.
Jonah Gorevic is an 8th Grader at Hackley High School, opening up this past weekend at the Somers Big Red Invitational. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Lucason is a 7th Grader at Camden High School, opening up this past weekend at the Chittenango Invitational. While it may be their first race amongst high schoolers on the books, it is far from their first race. We dive in below to each of their stories, and look forward to the years to come.
