100m - Auto-Qualifer for Dream 100m

With a trip to the Dream Race on the line, the speed is about to heat up. Anton Porter (Mount Saint Micheal) leads the State and the field after his win at the Mayor's Cup in 10.71. However, Newburgh will look to open their season this weekend, bringing along Zach Warden and Janique Dessaline, both under 10.9 FAT. Add in Shaka Shomari (Holy Trinity) and Kyshawn Bonner (Windsor CT) with his 10.83 personal best, and this could get fast.

200m

If we undersold the 100m dash field, it's because the 200m field is exceptionally strong. One year ago, Richard Rose (Boys and Girls) and Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon) faced off at this very same meet in the 400m. It took 47.21 by Rose to win that race, for some perspective on speed. It seems, this year the pair have decided to cut the distance in half. Both are entered in the 200m prelims, on what is slated to be an 80 degree day. However, to count out the rest of the field, wouldn't do it justice. The top 8 seeds all are under 22-seconds. That means you could run 21.85 in the prelims, and not make the finals. Clara Barton brings in Ronaldo Griffiths and Kermani Mighty, at 21.85 and 21.97 respectively. Newburgh brings back Warden and Dessaline, both under 22.0. Add in Kevon White (Springfield Gardens), with his NY #2 21.88, and then Shaka Shomari (Holy Trinity), and you have the highlight race of the early season. This final will be loaded.

400m

While the field may be a little deflated by the focus on the 200m, the final will still feature six athletes sub-49. Robert Haughton (Saratoga) went 48.84 last spring, and will look to top the field. However, just ahead of him is Mergaran Poleon (Paul Robeson), who went 48.83 last year too. Robeson also brings Kiambu Gall, capable of a similiar performance. Kimani Anderson (Medgar Evers) rounds out the top seeds, looking to break through.
