Meet Info |
The New York State Outdoor Championships return to Cicero-North Syracuse High School for the fourth time in nine years after previous highly successful turns in 2004, 2005 and 2009. Events kick off on Friday, June 8 shortly after noontime, with all times being a bit approximate. Athletes from the NYSPHSAA public schools, CHSAA NYC-area Catholic schools, PSAL NYC-area public schools, and the NYSAIS NYC-area private schools will be meeting to see who can run, jump and throw the fastest and furthest.
At States, both the boys and girls have a total of 19 events to vie in, with 16 being individual competitions and three featuring relay squads. The action is further broken down between the Division 1 championships for the big schools (600 seed size and up) and Division 2 championships for smaller schools. In some events like long-distance races, 4x800m relay, pentathlon, high jump and pole vault, the D1 and D2 athletes compete together to decide the division crowns and the overall federation titles. In the rest of the events, the D1 and D2 athletes compete separately for division championships, and then the top 8 performers are selected to compete for the overall title, most of which are decided on Saturday. So yeah, you can potentially finish 7th in the D1 action and go on to win the overall State championship.
2012 has seen some solid action for the NY guys. Though the big warm-winter states tend to fill up the leader boards for most of the events, NY guys have had good results even outside of the pentathlon, which NY is main participant in and which Romario McDowell of Thomas Jefferson in NYC is the leader. Brendan Smith of CBA-Syracuse leads another NY-owned event, the 3000m steeplechase, Rudy Winkler of Averill Park leads the nation in the hammer throw, an event not at the State championship though it will get attention at the London Olympics in a few months. Dan Lennon of Peru is around the top 25 in the US in the 3000m, and two guys who picked up 400m hurdle crowns at States last year are among the national leaders, with Kadesh Roberts of Bay Shore at #4 and Jeremiah Obeng Agyapong at #11. The Collegiate and Kellenberg 4x800m relay teams are also around the top 20 in the nation. With 6 federation champions in individual events from 2011 back to take another crack at a title, States should see some terrific action from Friday around noon through to the wrapup somewhere around 4:00 on Saturday. |

2011 Synopsis |
States saw some epic battles for the boys last year, though not in the pole vault. Arlington's Jordan Yamoah entered the action with a 15 inch seed margin over the nearest competitor and he quickly broke the state and meet record before heading to Nationals to set the bar even higher finally at 16-8.75. The distance races all had close battles though, as Liverpool's Zavon Watkins held off Monroe-Woodbury's Ryan Brennan to win the 800m, but Greene's Chad Noelle outlasted Watkins in the 1600m, and on Day 1 Tim Luthin of Warwick held off Noelle in the 3200m. Packer's Eddie Owens ran away from everyone in the 3000m steeplechase, and Amityville's Sancho Barrett dominated the 110m hurdles. Brian Smith of Greece-Athena nipped Davion Wint of Christopher Columbus in a sophomore triumph. Sheepshead Bay's Rolyce Boston flew more than a foot farther than anyone else in the long jump to almost break a state record, and Erasmus Hall's Shane Green hopped almost 2 feet further than the other guys in the triple jump. Hackley's AJ Wolf topped everyone by an astounding 3 ft 7.25 inches in the shot put, and also threw his weight around well enough in the discus to pick up a 6th place. In the 4x100m, Medgar Evers sped past Mount Vernon and Half Hollow Hills, and in a great 4x800m matchup, Shaker won out over St. John the Baptist. Watkins, Smith, Wolf and many other champions are back looking for more, so there should be plenty of good stuff to watch at CNS. |

Top 12 Questions for 2012 States |
All of the athletes going to States are sure that their own particular events are the most important focal points of action during the meet, and though these beliefs are true, there are some classically epic battles at States that deserve special attention. Here is a top 12 list of the showdowns that are not to be missed.
12-- Can a sophomore from tiny Ticonderoga hold off the field in the 110m hurdles? Jay Hebert placed 4th in the States D2 championship last year and went below the 15.0 mark. Now at 14.07, Hebert is at the top in an event that saw the top four finishers from last year's federation champs race lost to graduation.
11-- Which guy has the most hops? Huntington's Tyriek Johnson has leaped just shy of 24 feet in the long jump. Amherst's Jailyn Twitty was a double LJ-TJ 2011 finalist at States last year and recently zoomed to the top of the triple jump rankings. Will either leap to the top of a tall podium or will other guys go further? The high jumpers also have hops, and among the four guys who have gone over 6-8 and are going to States are last year's 3rd-place back-flipper, Jonathan Carpenter of James O'Neill and the 2012 leader Mark Jackson of Longwood.
10-- Can anyone imagine beating Lennon in the 3200m? Peru's Dan Lennon has been on a tear this year, winning the NY XC Class B title and the indoor 5000m at Nationals, among other big races, and posting the best time in the NY in the 3200m this year at 9:00.52. But the senior has yet to win a States track title after finishing 2nd at indoors in the 3200m, and juniors Nick Ryan of Fayetteville-Manlius and Eric Holt of Carmel lead a pack of others also hoping to win in the long run.
9-- Can either of two NYC-area Catholic guys do a Yamoah? Last year Arlington's Jordan Yamoah shrugged off the injuries to set indoor and outdoor state records in the pole vault. It's a tall order for any NY vaulter to get into Yamoah's stratosphere, but two guys who got a close view of the high-flying action last year were the 4th- and 5th-place States finishers, Michael Brunoforte of St. Anthony's and Greg Gallagher of Iona Prep. Both guys have gone to 16 feet this year and are set for a showdown at States.
8-- Can Brendan Smith outrun the big guys again and make a giant splash in the steeplechase? CBA-Syracuse's Brendan Smith followed up his Class C XC States title last fall by blasting away from the favorites to win the Federation championship a week later. Now he has a big margin in the rankings for the 3000m steeplechase, but he still has 35 hurdles to overcome for a States track title.
7-- Can St. John the Baptist kick it up a notch in the 4x800m relay? Last year SJB finished a second and a half in back of Shaker for the States title, and this year Monroe-Woodbury, NYC private Collegiate and CHSAA archrival Kellenberg have taken over the top spots in the NY rankings leaving SJB trailing again. Is this the year the Cougars cash in on the top prize?
6-- Will there be a repeat for the States 400m hurdles federation title? Last year Jeremiah Obeng Agyapong of Dewitt Clinton captured the Division 1 400m hurdles title but then was beaten by Bay Shore's Kadesh Roberts for the federation title. This year Roberts has opened a gap on the competition and appears ready to cruise to another crown.
5-- Who will make the most impact in shot put and discus's weighty matters? Hackley's August (AJ) Wolf leads the NY rankings in both weight events this year after dominating the shot put at States in 2011 and taking 6th in the discus. But Wolf is only doing the discus at States, so Iona Prep's Will Pope will be one of the two favorites in the shot along with indoor shot champ Dominic Kosar of St. Joseph Collegiate, who is among the leaders in both events. Both will take a shot at the top.
4-- Which guys are the fab fast four? Last year Mount Vernon lost out to Medgar Evers in the 4x100m relay, and this year they're ranked #1 in NY. But another perennial Section 1 speed power Ramapo is close on the Knights' heels, and 2011 finalist Uniondale is also in the hunt.
3-- Will a middle distance superstar break the wire (or red beam sensor)? Christopher Columbus' Strymar Livingston and Liverpool's Zavon Watkins both won indoor States titles this year, and Watkins took the 2011 800m States title last year and finished 2nd in the 1600m while Livingston picked up a 4th in the 800m. This year in outdoors, Watkins leads the 800m rankings and is 2nd in the 1600m, while Livingston is tops in the 400m and among the leaders in the 800m. Watkins also has 4x800 gold medals from his freshman and sophomore years. Both seniors would like to go out with a super moment.
2-- Who wins the States' Dream race? Last year for likely the first time at States, five guys broke 4:13 in the 1600m in a race captured by Chad Noelle over Zavon Watkins. This year, three of the quintet -- Watkins, Chaminade's indoor 1600 champ Thomas Awad, and Horsehead's Brian Crimmins -- are back and are in the top 5 in the state rankings. Also primed to join the stampede for the finish are top-ranked Nick Ryan of Fayetteville-Manlius, Arlington's Sibby Hanson, John Jay-East Fishkill's Mike Turi, and Peru's Dan Lennon. Could be one for the ages.
1-- Who's NY's fastest guy? Two sprinters with special claims to the title of NY's fastest speeding bullet are Spring Valley's Winslow Dorsainvil and Greece-Athena's Brian Smith. Dorsainvil has won two consecutive indoor 55m States titles and won last year's 100m D1 States crown before pulling up lame to finish 6th in the federation final. Smith captured the 200m title at States last year, won the 300m championship indoors, and has the fastest time in the 100m in NY this year. Dorsainvil may have suffered a setback at the Section 1 Qualifiers that could hamper him at States and Smith may speed to a double triumph. But there are also speedy guys like Longwood's Mark Jackson, Burnt Hills' Joe Carr, and Xaverian's Laray Smith who think they can burn the track and be the faster blaster.

Boys Events |
The standings below for each of the 19 events contested at States lists the top 6 or so overall competitors and then provides the top 10 competitors for the Division 1 and Division 2 contests. The States results generally follow pretty near to the listed projections. In 2011, the #1 seed among all of the D1 and D2 athletes did win 12 of the 19 federation championships, and 15 events were won by one of the top three seeds, and 18 were taken by one of the top 6. The one freak of nature who defied the odds last year was Josh Trone of Long Beach who surged from the #12 overall seed to take 2nd in the 100m D1 contest and then win the federation crown. This year's underdogs may want to focus on Trone's "out of nowhere" charge to the title for inspiration in this year's contests.
There are a lot of the federation, Division 1 and Division 2 titles to claim and a lot of great contests to follow. And in each one of them, when the sweat has dried and the dust has settled, there will be one athlete or team left standing on the winner's podium.
Note: I can't vouch for all of the State and meet records, as a number that are cited in the most 2011 States souvenir book were clearly wrong and may not have been updated in years. I've revised some of the listings to make sense, but they're not official. |

|
Statement: If Winslow Dorsainvil is healthy enough to go head-to-head with Brian Smith, this could be one of the premier matchups of the day, featuring two indoor States sprint champs. But with Mark Jackson, Danito Dixon, Laray Smith, and Kwane Hayle also leaning for the line, there will be speed to burn. |

Statement: The last guy to capture the federation 100m and 200m at States was Jordan Manns in 2007. After winning the 200m at States last year and taking the 300m indoor title last March, Brian Smith could be poised for an attempt at the double crowns. But a pack of guys including Joe Carr, Tyroy Lawson, Christopher Belcher, Laray Smith, Kwane Hayle, and Mark Ingram have posted faster times in the 200m in 2012, so the title is up for grabs. |

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Chad Noelle (Greene) 4:11.17, State Record: 4:06.11, Meet Record: 4:06.11, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 4:17.24 (D1) - 4:24.24 (D2) |
|
Statement: The 800m reigning champ Zavon Watkins was runner-up to Chad Noelle in the 2011 1600m race, and this year he appears decently well set for another attempt at a double crown. But five guys ran under 4:13 in the 1600m race last year, and Thomas Awad and Brian Crimmins are back for more, and top-ranked Nick Ryan, indooor 3200m champ Kris Moran, and hot-running Sibby Hanson of Arlington and Mike Turi of John Jay-East Fishkill could make this a very fast and very crowded finish. |

The actual State record in the event is more than 2 seconds under the one cited above but was run back in the old 440 yard days back in 1966 with a White Plains team that included Larry James. |
