NEW YORK – Jefferson coach Claudel Martin said that no one talked about winning a city title. His team just understood what needed to be done.


It didn’t start that way though. Jefferson’s best thrower, Jevon Prince showed up late to the meet – he blamed the trains – and struggled in the shot put and failed to score. But Prince more than made up for the early scare.


He lead a 1-4 sweep in the javelin, tossing 139 feet, 11 inches and finished second in the discus to lead Jefferson to its first PSAL title since 2003 Sunday at Ichan Stadium. Jefferson scored 75 points.


Price and his teammates scored 28 points in the javelin alone and 50 total points in the field, outscoring Sheepshead Bay, which finished second with 46 points and Columbus, third with 38.


“We know that’s where our strength is,” Prince said. “That’s where most teams are lacking, in field events.”
