NEW YORK – It’s never a surprise when Mary Cain goes out hard. What is surprising though, is how hard she blasts off the starting line.


This time the Bronxville freshman bounced out of the pack on the first turn and opened a 40-meter lead in the first 200 meters. It was a demoralizing move that made the race appear to be over before it started. But it also became a showcase for the hottest freshman in the country this year.


“I got out and I’m like, ‘I’m not that tired,’” she said. “Then I saw the clock and I’m like, ‘Sixty-one?’ I kept looking at the clock thinking this must be wrong.”


It wasn’t. Cain was rolling. The freshman phenom kept cranking and won the 800 meters at the New York Relays Saturday in a nation-leading 2:06.44.


The funny part is that Cain is always shocked at how fast she starts her races although it’s never crossed her mind to back off.
