
Seniors Claudia Francis of Cardozo and Lukas Verzbicas of Carl Sandburg (Ill.) have been named this week’s AT&T Athletes of the Week for their stellar performances at the New Balance Track and Field Center over the weekend.
Francis, who has signed to compete at Oregon, dropped the sixth-fastest scholastic time in United States history Sunday when she won the 600 meters at the PSAL Queens Borough championships in 1:29.98. Francis joined her sister Phyllis, now a freshman at Oregon, as one of only five high schoolers to ever break the 1:30 barrier in the 600.
Her time is currently the fastest in the nation this season. Francis will have another chance to break the national record at the PSAL championships Feb. 25. The record is 1:29.27 set by Janine Davis (Queen of Peace, N.J.) in 2005. Phylli...
