PORTLAND, Ore. – One by one they crossed the finish line, each one crying. Fayetteville-Manlius knew what was happening.

“You did what you came here to do,” F-M coach Bill Aris said when they finally all gathered in one sobbing, smiling huddle.

Fayetteville-Manlius won its fifth straight national championship at the Nike Cross Nationals Saturday at Portland Meadows. That much most expected. What no one expected was the way they completely overwhelmed the best teams in the country. F-M scored an astounding 27 points, better than its score at the regional meet.

“We honestly couldn’t even believe it,” Villanova-bound senior Courtney Chapman said. “We talked about getting out compression better but we didn’t even think about what we could score.”
