Garden City wins epic 4x8: State record and three teams under 8:51

The talk all day was about the 4x800m. Sure the fields were loaded but for some reason the state meet never seemed to measure up to the seed times or the hype.

This year for the first time the 800m was run as a Federation final on Friday, meaning that the 800m runners did not have to race again on Saturday as usual. That opened up a spot in the order of events for the 1500/1600m runs on Saturday in the morning, which would give some runners more rest for the 4x800m. If that wasn't enough Mother Nature provided some extra rest and relief from the heat in the form of passing thunderstorms. What resulted was a perfect storm of events that combined to leave organizers asking why they hadn't done this years ago.

Garden City pulled out an amazing win over arguably the two most decorated distance schools in the history of high school girls track and cross country. Their winning time of 8:49.88 broke the old state record of 8:50.41 set by the legendary Boys and Girls team in 2002 at The Penn Relays.

Fayetteville-Manlius was 2nd in 8:50.56 and Saratoga Springs was 3rd in 8:50.70. Garden City's time is the 2nd best time in US history while FM and 'Toga now rank #4 and #5 all time.

Menges and Brianne Bellon of Saratoga took the stick together but Menges came out of the zone in first and FM's anchor quickly got back into the mix. All three anchors had to run under 2:08.5.
