SELECTION OF THE ALL LONG ISLAND INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES
Plainview, NY -- Representatives from the Nassau and Suffolk County Track Coaches Associations, NSCHSSA and USATF Long Island have come together to select the All Long Island athletes for the indoor track and field season. Performances throughout the season were analyzed, debated and discussed with an emphasis placed on achievements in the championship meets (County/Intersectional, State, National) and the Long Island Elite Invitational.
Three athletes were selected for each individual running and field event to comprise 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All Long Island. Athletes who could have qualified for selections in multiple events were assigned one selection in their most outstanding event. The committee also has awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd All Long Island selections in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, sprint and distance medleys and the shuttle hurdle relay.
The 2017-2018 indoor track and field season was a highly successful one for Long Island, highlighted by the committee's selection of three most outstanding athletes for each of the sport's disciplines. The committee selected Christopher Borzor (Uniondale HS) and Chibugo Obichere (Valley Stream South HS) as the Most Outstanding Sprinters of the Season, Isaiah Claiborne (Northport HS) and Katherine Lee (Shoreham Wading River HS) as the Most Outstanding Distance Runners, and Vladislav Cullinane (Babylon HS) and Mia Abulencia (Half Hollow Hills West) as the Most Outstanding Field Event Competitors.
Our selections for the Most Outstanding Sprinters of the Season each captured individual State Championships with Christopher Borzor winning the 55 (6.44) and 300 (34.53), while Chibugo Obichere defended her outdoor hurdles title with a win in the 55HH (8.19). Borzor excelled all around this season with PRs of 6.42 (55), 34.53 (300) and 48.65 (400), while also boasting a 22-6 ½ leap in the long jump. His efforts helped Uniondale capture the Nassau County Championship and assisted in breaking the County's All-Time 4x200 record with a 1:29.12 at the National Championships. Chibugo Obichere was similarly dominant finishing no worse than 3rd in any 55HH race all season and establishing a new personal record of 7.98 in the event at the National Championships. She additionally added in performances of 7.26 in the 55 and competed on Valley Stream South's 4:02.07 performance in the State Championship 4x400 relay.
The Most Outstanding Distance
Runners of the Season had seasons that live within the realms of history
forever with Isiah Claiborne and Katherine Lee each earning All-American status
at the National Championships. Claiborne, another product of the tremendous
distance running program that has been established at Northport High School,
was the State Champion in the 1000 (2:26.95), just missing the Suffolk County
Record, and as a member of the 4x800 relay (7:56.52). At the National
Championships he additionally went on to capture All-American accolades as a
member of the 4x800 (3rd) and Distance Medley Relays (4th),
along with his individual performance of 4:10.96 in the mile to place 4th.
Katherine Lee enjoyed similar successes beginning with her 2nd place
finish at the State Championships in the 1000 (2:46.91). Lee then continued on
to the National Championships, a meet that she has enjoyed tremendous success
in, with a 4:46.61 in the mile to place 3rd overall and add another
All-American honor to a resume already loaded with unbelievable distinctions.
Finally, the selections for the Most Outstanding Field Event Competitors possessed strong performances in the New York State Championships with Vladislav Cullinane leaping 6-7 to win the State Championship in the high jump and Mia Abulencia attaining double All-State honors in the long and triple jumps. Cullinane proved to be dominant in the high jump with an incredible seven performances of 6-3 or higher this season and highlighted with a 6-9 jump at the Section XI State Qualifiers. He reigned as the Suffolk County Champion in the event as well. Mia Abulencia had a season-best of 18-1 ½ to win the Section XI State Qualifiers in the long jump, then repeated the performance with an 18-1 at States to place 3rd overall. She added to her success in the triple jump with a bound of 37-0 ¼ to finish 7th in the Federation Championships, just off her personal record of 37-11 established in her County Championship win in the event.
The Long Island Track and Field Coaches Association would like to congratulate all of these outstanding athletes on a memorable and successful indoor track and field campaign. Future All Long Island selections for cross-country and track and field will be made annually after the conclusion of each season.
