6. Corning Is Resurgent
The boys of Corning are on a road to redemption. In 2016, they went undefeated as a team through the championship season, only to come up in third at the regional championship. No doubt that has been on their mind, as their build up in 2017 has been more gradual. That decision was surely impacted by the early injury to Quinn Nicholson, which may have been a blessing in disguise.
They've managed to stay under-the-radar in both training and competition, and are peaking at the right time. Not only is Quinn rested and ready, with one month less of pounding in his legs, Corning saw 10-point speed rating jumps in their fourth and fifth runners at sectionals, jumping them up to No. 2 overall in the state, and possibly tied at the No. 1 spot. Bryce Derick, who had carried the load up front for Corning during the early season, was sick at sectionals, and had a significant drop-off. If he returns to peak form, 2017 could be a mirror image to the year before. After not winning a race so far, they could take home the regional title going away.
