Boys Races
Varsity 1
Individual: It was a Tuohy Takeover today with Patrick Tuohy (North Rockland) getting the ball rolling for a day of wins to come from the stellar family of athletes. He ran the course with ease to get the top time of the day, looking to moreover use this course to get a feel for his Sections race in two weeks time. Blaine Doyle (Cornwall) wasn't seen coming down the stretch until 23 seconds later, with Ray Sambrotto (Sweet Home) capping off the top 3 for the first varsity race of the day.
Team: A solid performance from Cornwall today as they placed their 5 men in the top 20 to take the champion spot by 36 points. It was a fight for second between Tappan Zee and North Rockland, with both teams scoring with 86 points. However, thanks to Tappan Zee's 6th man, Will Joyner, placing before North Rockland's 6th man, the Flying Dutchmen were the ones leaving with the silver today.
Varsity 2
Individual: Coming off an incredible performance at the Manhattan Invitational last week, it came as no surprise to see Ryan Guerci (Nanuet) coming across the line first. However, he was still disappointed in his race since he made a wrong turn at one point in the course and ended up having to run extra. Guerci had enough of a lead over Robert Thompson (Irondequoit) and Colin Waters (Arlington) that his top spot wasn't jeopardized, but he's looking to return in two weeks time to break 16:20.
Team: Both Arlington and Irondequoit had their runners evenly dispersed throughout their race, and it was back and forth between who would emerge victorious at the end of the day with both teams getting their top 4 in the top 15. Ultimately, with Arlington capping off their team scorers in the top 20 and Irondequoit in the top 30, the men in maroon came out on top.
Varsity 3
Individual: This was the closest race that we saw today where there was no distinct winner until the first runner crossed the finish line. There was only a mere 13 seconds between first and fifth place, and it was a junior domination. Francisco Beltran (Schalmont) used his kick coming out of the final hill to propel him to the front of the pack that included Matthew Rizzo (Bronxville) and Thomas Garrison (Washingtonville), and was able to hold them off long enough to walk away with gold.
Team: It was a close call between the Warwick Valley and Pearl River teams today, only being separated by 4 points in their team scoring. Between Warwick Valley getting their five men in the top 20, along with the absence of Pearl River's top runner, Matt Politis, that was all they needed to push themselves to victory.
Varsity 4
Individual: Although the heat was a bit much to take, don't be fooled into thinking that it was déjà vu you were experiencing watching the last boys race of the day. The Fusco twins of Somers went 1 and 2 in their race, with Matthew Fusco placing 11 seconds ahead of Greg Fusco. Jack Buckley (John Jay Cross River) was giving Greg Fusco a run for his money in the final 600 meters, beginning to push up on his tail, but coming out onto the final stretch, Fusco's kick in the back woods was strong enough to lock in his runner-up spot.
Team: It was one Monroe-Woodbury uniform after another for their team to snag the last men's race varsity title of the day. Although a solid effort from John Jay Cross River, they were unable to make up the 29 points that separated them from first place. Mount Academy came away with a third place plaque, gathering 113 points to do so.
