Section | Top Teams | Notes | 1 | North Rockland, Ursuline, Carmel, Suffern, Mamaroneck, Lakeland-Panas, Arlington | North
Rockland won S1-A for the second straight year in 2016 and will be
favored for three in a row, but Ursuline, Carmel. and Suffern could all
challenge the Red Raiders if everything falls into place for any of
them. | 2 | Saratoga, Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, Colonie, Guilderland, Bethlehem, Shaker, Ballston Spa | Saratoga
hasn't lost at sectionals since 1999, but Shen went to NXN Nationals
last year and lost the S2-A battle by only 3 points after getting beat
on a tie-breaker two years earlier. So at some point the Blue Streaks'
long streak has got to end, and with Niskayuna also returning a very
strong team, this year could be the first without a Toga party during
the 21st century --- or not. | 3 | Fayetteville-Manlius, West Genesee, Liverpool, Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse | FM
has a lock on the sectional title, but West Genesee, Liverpool, and Baldwinsville
have all moved up among the top 12 teams in Class A, so S3-A is no
longer just the stomping ground of the perennial NXN champ. | 4 | Elmira Express, Ithaca, Corning, Horseheads | With
Corning losing three of its top four including Jessica Lawson to
graduation, Elmira and Ithaca seem to have edged a little ahead as the
favorites for the S4-A title. | 5 | Canandaigua, Webster Thomas, Penfield, Rush-Henrietta, Fairport, Churchville-Chili, Hilton | S5-A
is in a bit of turmoil after heavy graduations and the movement of some
teams between classes, but last year's S5-B winner Canandaigua returns
to Class A and has the most firepower. Webster Thomas has won the last
four titles, and the Titans and Penfield should also be ready for the
showdown in November. | 6 | West Seneca West, Clarence, Lockport, Lancaster | In
another sectional group that was hard hit by graduation, West Seneca
West returns most of its varsity crew and will be the favorite over
Clarence and reigning champ Lockport. | 7 | No representatives |
| 8 | Manhasset, Syosset, East Meadow, Port Washington, Oceanside, Massapequa | Syosset
has won five straight S8-A titles, but 2016 S8-B champ Manhasset moves
up to A and may have the advantage with a full returning squad versus
the Braves' depleted unit, and East Meadow could also be ready for the
challenge. | 9 | Monroe-Woodbury, Warwick Valley, Washingtonville, Pine Bush | Monroe-Woodbury
is shooting for its fourth straight sectional title and will be favored
again because of its depth in another battle with Warwick Valley. | 10 | No representatives |
| 11 | Sachem East, Ward Melville, Smithtown, Bay Shore, Eastport-South Manor, Commack, Sachem North | The
S11-A battle should again be one of the best. Reigning champ Ward
Melville lost a little more to graduation than did runner-up Sachem
East, and the two teams will start the year again as the favorites with
Smithtown and Bay Shore right behind. |
