The uniforms may be red instead of green and the name halved to just Manlius, but the familiar sight of a dominating FM performance at NXN Nationals is easy to pick out as Claire Walters, Phoebe White, and Sophie Ryan form a wave near the front of the race and Rebecca Walters and Palmer Madsen keep in view a short ways back.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Hornets have the top 5 back from last year's NXN national champions, and they seem well set to win an 11th national title even if they may look not quite as deep as the 2016 squad in preseason. Claire and Rebecca Walters, Ryan, White, and Madsen are all back to form the core of a team with near-record preseason speed ratings, and sixth runner Villalba also ran in all the big meets last season. And as always, there will be some expectations that a new group of promising young Hornets will make their debut.

Last Year's Summary: 5th in NXN-NY, 3rd in Federation, 3rd in States A, 1st in Sectionals A
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Saratoga fell back a ways in 2016 when it ran no big meet in NY until after mid October. Still the Blue Streaks kept their sectionals streak alive against a powerful Shenendehowa squad and sophomore Chmiel had one of the greatest seasons ever for the school with a States and Federation win and her second straight top 5 finish at NXN Nationals. Who will be forming the rest of the Toga top 5 is still unclear, and before that question is settled it's hard to say what the chances will be for pushing the streak of States visits to 18 and if Saratoga should be considered a top contender for the second NY berth at NXN Nationals.

This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Although North Rockland did not make a repeat visit to NXN Nationals last year, it still produced some sparkle by winning the Federation title and taking its best place ever at States with a 2nd. But now with Alex Harris moving onward in pursuit of ever more steeplechase glory, the leadership of the team will fall to two of the top 10 runners in the state, sophomores Tuohy and Morales. Though the Red Raiders should be explosive at the top, a return to Portland will likely depend on the further steady development of seniors O'Connor and Feeney and of freshman Pezzementi to narrow the gap behind the top two.
Shenendehowa | Plainsmen
Section: 2 | Class: A | Colors: Green and white
Shenendehowa's green-clad Gang of 4 including (from left) Hannah Reale, Charlotte Hartman, Olivia Lomascola, and Julia Zachgo all finished in the top 22 and within 36 seconds of each other at NXN-NY regionals to score well enough to earn a trip to Nationals. Pacing them for part of the way was pink-clad Tully 8th grader Brooke Rauber, who finished one spot behind Shen's leader Reale, who was 10th.

| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shen worked some magic at the end of the year to peak at just the right point to earn a trip to NXN-Nationals behind a pack of four runners who ran well enough to overcome a gap of 49 places to the 5th finisher. With longtime standout Julia Zachgo gone from the top group, the remaining leadership trio of seniors Reale, Lomascolo, and Hartman will need some reinforcements if Shen is to win its first sectional title since 1995 and seek a fourth trip to Nationals. The transfer of Emily Digman to Shen could be a big help, but the Plainswomen will still be needing further development from a group of seniors or the arrival of a fast new middle-schooler.

| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Year's Outlook | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Niskayuna snapped back last year to finish 3rd in Sectionals and 4th in Federations. Longtime standout Lexi Sciortino is gone, but Abigail Spiers is back from medaling at States, and Amelia and Charlotte Kokernak, Sydney Smith, and Kristina Koes make up the rest of a.top 5 that all rate 100 TR or higher, a rare quality for teams these days. Liyat Kebbede finished very well as a 7th grader in 2016, so if all the pieces fall together right, the Silver Warriors could be taking their first sectional title in 33 years and charging on to big feats at regionals.
