MileSplit HQ -  Ever since the first NY State Intersectional track and field championship was held in 1924, crazed fans have leaped into a happy obsession right around now  Each year in early June, we of the Empire State turn our attention to that most vital of all questions of human existence: Who's winning at States and then a week later at Nationals? For those of of us of an even more questioning (and perhaps questionable) nature, we will even be thinking about the possibilities for the USATF Junior Nationals and the World Juniors a little further down the road.

All big questions in track can be broken down to smaller questions, and right now these might well include: Will the favorites (top seeds) in the events win? Will we see huge marks at States and Nationals from the winners? Will any section emerge as the powerhouse region on the boys and girls sides? Will New York's athletes prevail against the warrior legions of the other states at Nationals down in North Carolina?

In a world where one untimely flinch can be the difference between a champion and one anguished soul staggering away from his empty lane after a DQ, nothing can be ever be predicted with certainty, even if a group of athletes named Sammy, Lanae-Tava, and Alyssa or Infinite, Rayvon, and Sam are seeking to make the future seem predetermined in at least one or more events. But a peek at the results and trends of 2015 Outdoor and 2016 Indoor States and Nationals can help us get prepped for all the general likelihoods at the upcoming meets.

And a spoiler alert -- anyone who is still trying push the sad delusional malarkey about NY not being the imperial superpower at Nationals is going to be very disappointed to read the real numbers. Real sorry about that.

6 Questions for Meety Consumption

Scoring for the outdoor States and both indoor and outdoor Nationals held during the last year is based on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 point system for the top six places. For this years indoor States, I went with an 8 place 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system to give everyone in the finals their due. States scores use the results of the championship contests and not the Friday D1 and D2 events, though if the best time or mark was produced during the division events, that fact is noted in the questions about the favorites and whether they bettered their seed marks. Scoring for Nationals is based exactly as the official results were posted, and it does not weed out the places of Canadian athletes who were of course legitimate contestants. It does eliminate the imaginary athletes who were mistakenly listed in other articles about which state was the best at Nationals.
