Well, there is the field, and then there is Sammy Watson (Rush-Henrietta). The Sophomore National Record holder in the event is now a junior, and with the defense of the State Title on her mind, she is the only athlete in the field under 2:50. That's not to say an upset is uncalled for, as Watson will have a full day of racing ahead of her. Katie Devore (Mamaroneck) has hit 2:55 in the year prior, and has already ran 3-flat, fulfilling the role of Top Seed in the field from this year. Deidre Lewin (Kellenberg) rounds out the Sub-3min field, just under at 2:59. The floodgates open after that, as major players are hovering right at that mark, looking to break through. Agnes Mansaray (Penn Wood, PA), Katherine Lee (Shoreham-Wading River), and Keyana Zollner (Middletown) are all ready to make their move. Could we see a very fast time spurred on in the early season?
Mile | ||||
Highlights | ||||
We've got two Letter Race Champions from the Manhattan Invite going at it over the full mile distance in Staten Island. Lydia Olivere (Padua Academy, DE) has the fastest seed of the field, with her 4:57.11, but Lauren Chapey (Mamaroneck) is not far behind at 4:58.09. There will be plenty of company with Emily Digman (Burnt-Hills), Sunny Nagpaul (Lakeland/Panas), and Meg Tuthill (Mercy).
2-Mile | ||||
Highlights | ||||
Just like the mile, we have two Letter Race Winners from Manhattan highlighting the field. Lauren Chapey (Mamaroneck) is double entered, and the NXN-Qualifier may find her abilities more suited to the longer race so close to XC. Abby Green (Walter Johnson, MD) won the letter race at Manhattan, and is looking to keep that momentum going. But both will need to look out for Sydney Rice (Notre Dame Academy), the CHSAA Intersectional Champion. Valerie Romero (Sachem East) and Juliet Kohli (Montclair, NJ) look to round out the major players.
