New York's Stars Shine Bright At State Championships

State of the Action: As many expected, 7th Grader Katelyn Tuohy took the pace out hard in the opening laps.  The field stayed close, as they knew she could hold onto the pace, and swirled through the opening laps.  As the top seeds grew restless, the pack began to swallow the leader.  Abbey Wheeler of Elmira was the first athlete to make a definitive move, in an effort to lose the pack.  When Wheeler moved forward, Page Duca's eyes perked up.  She knew she would have to go with Wheeler to stay in contention.  Slowly by slowly, Duca inched towards the leader, until they were side-by-side.  Wheeler had made her move too early, with Duca taking advantage of her competitors tired legs.  Page Duca would pull away in the penultimate laps, coming across as a first time State Champion.
