New York's Stars Shine Bright At State Championships

Event Info: 2014 Winner: Jessica Lawson (Corning) 9:49.68, State Record: 9:04.51 (standard track), 9:02.10 (oversized track) Meet Record: 9:29.89, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 10.21.14

State of the Action: Fool me once, shame on you.  Bella Burda, and the girls 3000m field, were not looking to be fooled again.  After a slow, tactical race lead to Jessica Lawson kicking away from the field the year before, it seemed like there was a concerted effort to keep the pace moving in 2015.  Leading the charge was Bella Burda, joined by a quartet of other top seeds.  Exchanging the lead briefly through the first 1500m, the pace meandered a bit through the middle.  As Burda began to notice, she pulled away, and it was Section 1 rival Anna Flynn who saw the familiar move.  She went with the senior, running stride for stride as the laps ticked down.  But it would be that XC strength that garnered Burda a State Title in the fall that would prove to be the difference maker, as she pulled away slightly in the final lap, responding to a late surge from Flynn.  Burda was able to grab a state title that she had won two years ago, proving she still has her staying power.
