2014 Fantasy All-Star Relay: What If?

What if High School athletics were run like the Olympics?  If each state would have their own Olympic Qualifier, to compete against other states like the United States does against the other countries of the world.  We decided to run the numbers (no pun intended) to see exactly what that would look like.  And no better way than to examine what an All-New York Relay squad would look like.  We took the best times of the best runners, whether it be Indoors or Outdoors, and threw them on a relay together.  We then adjusted the times to compensate for relay splits, which are typically faster than their open event counterparts.  What we found is numerous National records, and some interesting stats as well.  Read on Below, and compare it with 2013's edition here, or  2012's edition by clicking here.

Boys 4x100m      Girls 4x100m
10.58 - Andre Hunter (Charlotte)   11.34 - Brenessa Thompson (Medgar Evers Prep)
10.64 - Trenten Beram (Arlington)   11.67 - Zola Golden (Arlington)
10.64 - Dellon Peters (James Madison)   11.94 - Alexia Douglas (Brentwood)
10.67 - Ernest Agyeman (Dewitt Clinton)   12.00 - Catarra Burroughs (Wilson)
2014 Total - 42.53   2014 Total - 46.95
2013 Total - 42.40   2013 Total - 47.38
2014 Adjusted - 41.85   2014 Adjusted - 46.43

Breakdown: The girls showers a significant improvement over last year, impressive to say the least, while the boys slowed up slightly.  Thompson and Golden put down impressive marks, while their were no stand out marks from the boys such as there had been in the past.  Quality relays all around.

Boys 4x200      Girls 4x200
21.20 - Trenten Beram (Arlington)   23.83 - Symone Darius (New Rochelle)
21.25 - Andre Hunter (Charlotte)   23.91 - Brenessa Thompson (Medgar Evers Prep)
21.52 - Semasa Oni (Medgar Evers Prep)   23.91 - Zola Golden (Arlington)
21.56 - Richard Rose (Boys and Girls)   24.66 - Imani Solan (Suffern)
2014 Total - 1:25.33   2014 Total - 1:35.31
2013 Total- 1:25.63   2013 Total- 1:36.98
2014 Adjusted - 1:24.87   2014 Ajdusted - 1:34.25

Breakdown: However, both squads improved over the longer sprint.  The girls moreso, having three members under 24 seconds, while the depth balanced out the front runners on the boys side.  We are also starting to see athletes make multiple disciplines, which is not uncommon.  Fast is fast, no matter the distance.

Boys 4x400      Girls 4x400
45.13 - Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam)   52.82 - Zola Golden (Arlington)
46.04 - Richard Rose (Boys and Girls)   54.21 - D'Jai Baker (North Babylon)
46.16 - Trenten Beram (Arlington)   54.82 - Sammy Watson (Rush-Henrietta Sperry)
47.17 - Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon)   54.84 - Symone Darius (New Rochelle)
2014 Total - 3:04.50   2014 Total - 3:36.69
2013 Total- 3:10.60   2013 Total- 3:37.21
2014 Adjusted - 3:03.34   2014 Adjusted - 3:33.43

Breakdown: No surprise here, as this season saw the greatest potential 400m fields in State History.  To put this in perspective, the National Team for Team USA at World Juniors won in 3:03.31.  I believe that an All-NY HS Team could very well challenge that mark, and had been the best in the world.  We may have cheated and included some official relay splits in our calculations, but this is a relay, right?  On the girls side, everyone broke under 55 seconds, and the top end was reaching new heights.  A banner year for the event.

Boys 4x800      Girls 4x800
1:52.37 - Luke Gavigan (Tappan Zee)   1:59.51 - Mary Cain (NOP)
1:52.40 - Simon Nwana (Syosset)   2:06.35- Sammy Watson (Rush-Henrietta Sperry)
1:52.40 - Jordan Burton (Warwick)   2:10.60 - Shaniqua Kirkpatrick (Benjamin Cardozo)
1:52.41 - Matt Murray (Norwich)   2:11.21 - Sarah Hardie (John Glenn)
2014 Total - 7:29.58   2014 Total - 8:27.67
2013 Total- 7:29.03   2013 Total- 8:21.39
2014 Adjusted - 7:26.37   2014 Adjusted - 8:34.66

Breakdown: Interesting developments on both sides of the coin.  On the boys side, I didn't think we'd be that close to last year, as no one had broken 1:52 all season long.  Several key legs coming towards the end of the season added to that time.  On the girls side, Mary Cain was pulling the weight of a state that looked the opposite of the 400m.  It was one of the weaker years, without anyone breaking 2:11.00 until after the post-season meets had been completed.  But then again, we had been spoiled these past couple of years in the event.
