2013 Fantasy All-Star Relay: What If?

What if High School athletics were run like the Olympics?  If each state would have their own Olympic Qualifier, to compete against other states like the United States does against the other countries of the world.  We decided to run the numbers (no pun intended) to see exactly what that would look like.  And no better way than to examine what an All-New York Relay squad would look like.  We took the best times of the best runners, whether it be Indoors or Outdoors, and threw them on a relay together.  We then adjusted the times to compensate for relay splits, which are typically faster than their open event counterparts.  What we found is numerous National records, and some interesting stats as well.  Read on Below, and compare it with 2012's edition by clicking here.

Boys 4x100m      Girls 4x100m
10.56 - Winston Lee (Hudson)   11.63 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
10.58 - Brian Smith (Greece-Athena)   11.87 - Kimberely Bailey (Taft)
10.59 - Chris Belcher (Sayville)   11.90 - Paige Thompson-Charles (Medgar Evers Prep)
10.67 - Brandon Gooden (John Bowne)   11.98 - Christina Walter (Maple Grove)
Total - 42.40   Total - 47.38
2012 Total - 42.75   2012 Total - 47.97
Adjusted - 41.64   Adjusted - 46.82

Breakdown: The girls of Medgar evers are just that good.  Utilizing two of the All-Star members in their relay alone, their State Record trumps the combined efforts of the four top runners.  Of course, in a relay, this time would drastically drop, but the girls state record was well earned for the cougars.  On the boys side, it seems the average 100m time was slightly faster than 2012.  We had three athletes under 10.6 in 2013, while none were able to accomplish that the year before.

Boys 4x200      Girls 4x200
21.16 - Brian Smith (Greece-Athena)   23.69 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
21.39 - Rhyheim Lawes (Liverpool)   24.15 - Deejah Stevens (Benjamin Cardozo)
21.52 - Diamonte Corley (William Floyd)   24.48 - Symone Darius (New Rochelle)
21.56 - Laray Smith (Unattached)   24.66 - Kimberly Bailey (Taft NYC)
Total - 1:25.63   Total - 1:36.98
2012 Total- 1:26.14   2012 Total- 1:35.45
Adjusted - 1:25.0   Ajdusted - 1:34.65

Breakdown: Another big development.  On the boys side, the average time is much quicker, yet on the girls, the time is actually slower.  For the boys, the times compile some of the quickest runners around, all sub-22.  They would potentially nab the state record, which stands at a blistering 1:25.45, set by Newburgh in 2003.  For the girls, there is no question that this would be the makings of a legendary squad.  It would blast the State Record of 1:38.39 set by Paul Robeson of Brooklyn set in 2001, and would rank 4th All-Time Nationally, behind the US#1 1:33.87, set by Long Beach Poly in 2004.

Boys 4x400      Girls 4x400
47.20 - Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam)   51.32 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
47.51 - Richard Rose (Boys and Girls)   54.99 - Maddie Kopp (Spencerport)
47.86 - Jonathan Greenwood (Freeport)   55.34 - Emma Gallagher (Garden City)
48.03 - Ayo Obadare (Elmont)   55.56 - Candace Taylor (Friends' Academy)
Total - 3:10.60   Total - 3:37.21
2012 Total- 3:10.59   2012 Total- 3:35.67
Adjusted - 3:09.22   Adjusted - 3:33.87

Breakdown: The boys 1600m relay combines some of the best talent in the Northeast.  Only .01 of second seperates the 2013 team from the year prior.  The state record of 3:12 set by Newburgh in 2003 would be gone, and the mark would be US #11 All-Time, behind the crazy fast national record of 3:07.4 set by Hawthorn, California in 1985.  On the girls, iagain is seems as if the average is slower.  This figures in that the #2 punch of Kyle Plante is no longer included behind frontrunner, Kadecia Baird.  You can easily say goodbye to the NYS Record of 3:39.77 set by Boys and Girls in 2008, and add to that saying goodbye to the National Record of 3:35.49 set by Long Beach Poly in 2004.  The top two girls, and all four boys graduate this year, but not before Baird has a chance to lower her personal record in the Carribean later this summer.

Boys 4x800      Girls 4x800
1:51.88 - Ryan Manahan (Marcellus)   2:03.34 - Mary Cain (Bronxville)
1:52.29 - Nick Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius)   2:03.59- Sabrina Southerland (Benjamin Cardozo)
1:52.36 - Dylan Murphy (Kellenberg)   2:09.07 - Jazmine Fray (Kellenberg)
1:52.50 - Sean Kelly (Chaminade)   2:09.22 - Emma Gallagher
Total - 7:29.03   Total - 8:21.39
2012 Total- 7:24.49   2012 Total- 8:27.45
Adjusted - 7:26.14   Adjusted - 8:17.69

Breakdown: The boys finally have history catching up to them.  2012 was an exceptional year for the 800m, with the slowest time of the relay beating 2013's #2.  But the boys hold their own.  Here, the NYS Record of 7:35.15 set by Syosset in 2005 would merely be a footnote, as the Relay would just nearly match the National Record of Long Beach Poly (7:28.75) set recently in 2011.  For the girls, was there even a doubt?  The current NYS Record is held by Fayetteville-Manlius, grabbing the title in 8:46.98 back in 2010, with the National Record at 8:43.12 set by Roosevelt, Maryland back in 2008.  However, neither of those stand a chance of being in the same stratosphere, as this potential quartet smashes that by over 20 seconds.  And remember, that the American Record, according to TrackandFieldNews, stands at 8:17.91, a mark that could be achieved by these four ladies.
