2012 Fantasy All-Star Relay: What If?

What if High School athletics were run like the Olympics?  If each state would have their own Olympic Qualifier, to compete against other states like the United States does against the other countries of the world.  We decided to run the numbers (no pun intended) to see exactly what that would look like.  And no better way than to examine what an All-New York Relay squad would look like.  We took the best times of the best runners, whether it be Indoors or Outdoors, and threw them on a relay together.  We then adjusted the times to compensate for relay splits, which are typically faster than their open event counterparts.  What we found is numerous National records, and some interesting stats as well.  Read on Below.

Boys 4x100m      Girls 4x100m
10.62 - Brian Smith (Greece-Athena   11.63 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
10.73 - Laray Smith (Xaverian)   11.81 - Valencia Hannon (Elmont Memorial)
10.70 - Winslow Dorsainvil (Spring Valley)   11.90 - Robbi Rogers (Mt. Vernon)
10.70 - Danito Dixon (Sheepshead Bay)   12.0 - Shenika King (Canarsie)
Total - 42.75   Total - 47.97
Adjusted - 42.0   Adjusted - 47.12

Breakdown: Amazingly, the numbers don't do the potential justice over 100m.  Even after compiling the best open times, the best relays all come from actual team times, with Uniondale Boys (41.55) and Medgar Evers Girls (46.57).

Boys 4x200      Girls 4x200
21.33 - Joe Carr (Burnt Hills)   23.26 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
21.56 - Wayne Gordon (Sweet Home)   23.98 - Kyle Plante (Colonie)
21.61 - Laray Smith (Xaverian)   23.89 - Deejah Stevens (New Rochelle)
21.64 - Steven Gayle (Mt. Vernon)   24.32 - Kimberly Bailey (Taft NYC)
Total - 1:26.14   Total - 1:35.45
Adjusted - 1:25.0   Ajdusted - 1:34.65

Breakdown: This is where things get interesting.  For the boys, the times compile some of the quickest runners around, all sub-22.  They would potentially nab the state record, which stands at a blistering 1:25.45, set by Newburgh in 2003.  For the girls, there is no question that this would be the makings of a legendary squad.  It would blast the State Record of 1:38.39 set by Paul Robeson of Brooklyn set in 2001, and would rank 4th All-Time Nationally, behind the US#1 1:33.87, set by Long Beach Poly in 2004.

Boys 4x400      Girls 4x400
47.35 - Steven Gayle (Mt. Vernon)   51.04 - Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep)
47.44 - Strymar Livingston (Christopher Columbus)   53.32 - Kyle Plante (Colonie)
47.80 - Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam)   55.63 - Emma Gallagher (Garden City)
48.0 - Robert Rhodes (Boys and Girls)   55.68 - Jessica Gelibert (Bay Shore)
Total - 3:10.59   Total - 3:35.67
Adjusted - 3:09.21   Adjusted - 3:33.87

Breakdown: The boys 1600m relay combines some of the best talent in the Northeast.  The state record of 3:12 set by Newburgh in 2003 would be gone, and the mark would be US #11 All-Time, behind the crazy fast 3:07.4 set by Hawthorn, California in 1985.  On the girls, it seems its a whole other story.  You can easily say goodbye to the NYS Record of 3:39.77 set by Boys and Girls in 2008, and add to that saying goodbye to the National Record of 3:35.49 set by Long Beach Poly in 2004.  An amazing crop of talent that only graduates two of the four members.

Boys 4x800      Girls 4x800
1:49.98 - Zavon Watkins (Liverpool)   2:03.34 - Mary Cain (Bronxville)
1:50.53 - Robert Rhodes (Boys and Girls)   2:06.44- Alexis Panisse (Benjamin Cardozo)
1:51.53 - Strymar Livingston (Christopher Columbus)   2:08.77 - Anima Banks (Mamaroneck)
1:52.08 - Andrew Keresztes (Port Jefferson)   2:08.90 - Kelsey Margey (Friends Academy)
Total - 7:24.49   Total - 8:27.45
Adjusted - 7:22.14   Adjusted - 8:24.69

Breakdown: The boys get their chance to shine here, as the times keep on dropping as the distance keeps increasing.  Here, the NYS Record of 7:35.15 set by Syosset in 2005 would merely be a footnote, as the Relay would smash the National Record of Long Beach Poly (7:28.75) set recently in 2011.  For the girls, was there even a doubt?  The current NYS Record is held by Fayetteville-Manlius, grabbing the title in 8:46.98 back in 2010, with the National Record at 8:43.12 set by Roosevelt, Maryland back in 2008.  However, neither of those stand a chance of being in the same stratosphere, as this potential quartet smash that by over 20 seconds.  If only.
